Default Help! Screw in roof latch stripped.

So I went to replace my roof latches on my hardtop today and got the lovely suprise of the front screw on BOTH latches being stripped. The heads are fine, I'm talking about the threads. I can turn all day and they don't come out a bit.

I'm about to go hysterical. The latches are very loose and really need to be replaced.

What do I do?

Am I doomed forever?

You can't really can't see the problem in pics obviously, but just for clarification here are the screws I am talking about:

Well, I have never delt with your exact stripped screws before, i can tell you what I would do with every other stripped screw that has challenged me.

The non destructive way...
If you can fit a small flat blade under the head of the screw, and tilt (leverage)it slightly to apply a pressure in the dirrection that you want the screw to come out. Then turn the screw with your screw driver while applying this tilting force and hopefully it will skip the threads and come out. I hope this all makes sense

The destructive way...
Carefully choose a drill bit that is the same size as the screw shaft, not the screw head....and drill it out.

You will have to re-tap these screw holes and replace the screws

Can you apply traction on the latch while unscrewing?

As I said above, I tried that. The maximum ammount that I can and still turn the screw still wields no results...

^^^ those work, or try a similar tool called an easy out. I use easy outs at work all the time and they work great...

But what if the threads are stripped out? Then I wouldn't be able to put another screw back in...

I don't know Honda did the threads on the hardtop. If they just taped the metal you can fix them with a helical thread insert.

Search thread inserts at McMaster-Carr for serveral types of thread inserts.

I don't think an easy out is going to work in your case. I think those are for when you break off the head.

Good luck

edit

If honda spot welded a nut to the back of the sheet metal and the welds are broke your best option may be to live with the old latches
