Default Help, is the servic dept. trying to screw me?

I took my car in for the TSB055 clutch disk replacement, and this morning the service guy called me and said that my pressure plate and flywheel are badly scorched. He's recommending I resurface the flywheel and replace the pressure plate. Now, I don't do high-rpm clutch drops, so I'm a little surprised that there's that much "damage" to the system. Is there any chance he's trying to pull one over on me? What are the consequences of not replacing the pressure plate, as that will not be covered under warranty? I'm gonna go down there this afternoon and take a look at the parts, so I'll take some pictures then.

It is the right repair recommendation, but many of us think these early clutch failures should be covered under warranty and some are. The weeny-ass clutch in this car is not up to repeated 9K rpm shifts, especially under extra load (hilly terrain or fully loaded) so it slips some.

Do get the parts replaced but make a case that it is warranty work.

If the parts are indeed badly scorched, you'll definitely be able to see the evidence. The flywheel contact area will be blued, streaked, and probably have numerous, tiny hair line cracks. The same is true for the pressure plate. I can't speak for Honda or the S2000, but generally clutches and pressure plates are replaced in pairs, even if, for example, the only real wear is in the clutch disk. The high cost and trouble of getting back into the clutch / tranny aren't generally worth the savings from not doing something.

However, IMHO, if the clutch has to be replaced as a result of a TSB, then the pressure plate (if "scorched") should be replaced by the factory at no charge to you. Same is true concerning the cost to machine the flywheel. That's like saying 'there's a TSB on your disc brake pads and we'll replace them free of charge. So sorry they scored and pitted your brake rotors. You have to pick up that cost yourself.

Nope, if the clutch needs replacing as a result of a TSB and has contributed to the scorched flywheel and pressure plate, then the factory should cover that.

I had same service done and when I picked up my car the trans made a loud whine out of the shifter in 2-4-6 gear the higher the rpm the louder the whine They said it was normal and after 6 month of complaining the flew a specialist in from calf. he said it was not normal and rebuilt trans completly only part reused was the case This was on my 2000 I now have traded for a 2002

Well, I went down to the dealership to take a look at the parts this afternoon. I could definitely tell that the clutch needed replacing, but the pressure plate doesn't look that bad off. I mean, there are some very slightly discolored areas, but that's about it. However, I didn't have a "clean" one to compare to, so who knows. I took a couple pics, but I'll have to wait until tomorrow to post them from work. The service manager said that he "couldn't make the call" on warrantying the replacement of the pressure plate (as it is a wear item and therefore not covered), so I have to call AHM tomorrow morning and try to get them to cover it. Seems a bit strange to me, but oh well...I'll give them a ring and see what happens. In 20k miles, there's no way the thing should have to replaced. So, unless AHM will pay for the pressure plate, I'm just going to have the dealer replace the clutch and resurface the flywheel...perhaps a Toda/ACT clutch, flywheel, and PP purchase is in my future?

I believe he said ~$215 for the pressure plate. No labor charges associated with installation. No charge for resurfacing the flywheel either.
