As well as being active in th s2k community, I am also active in the Mercedes-Benz community, and am a moderator on the Mercedes-Benz Club of America forum (www.MBCA.org). We have a rule on that forum: there are no stupid questions. No matter how "stupid" a question might seem to our car savvy members, personal attacks are immediately deleted. Here's an example of what some may think is a stupid question, but it isn't!

The manufacturer's site states that all MB models require 91 octane premium fuel (except of course the diesel model). Despite this fact, we once got a question "does my '01 E 320 require premium gas?" Well, believe it or not, the answer (generally accepted by all factory trained techs) is NO! Indeed, this car runs just fine on 87 octane regular, and that was the answer this OP got to what was -- on the surface -- a stupid question.

I like the "no such thing as a stupid question" rule, and suggest that we use it here.

Just something you may note if you're super detailed about the HIDs. I believe 2004 and earlier models have the DOT cutoff and clear lense. Where as the later years has the frensel lense with ECE cutoff, not as good, but less glare for on-coming traffic.

Good luck,
David

It's always tricky balancing n00b questions with a good signal/noise ratio on forum sites. IMO the OP really should have at least looked at the manufacturer's site for info before posting the question. It would have been very easy to answer on one's own.
but the manufacturer website doesn't go back in years just post current years. also someone one here might have more personal info bout the subject than any manufacturer website could provide

i believe the DOT cutoff gives the beam a nice, sharp, defined line - rather than a spread with a lot of glare and bleed.

non-HID example:

i've always wondered why people are so sensitive to "stupid" threads. If you see a thread with a title that you think is "stupid" then scroll down. No one asked you to answer or reply.

Honestly, stfu and let the newer members ask their questions.
And secondly, with thousands of threads and replies, search function isnt as easy, especially to people who are new to this.
