if 87 octane is $2.69, 89 is $2.79, and 91 or 93 is $2.93 or something, then you're saving like $0.14 per gallon, * ~12 gallon fill up = $1.68 you saved. relative to the $30k you shelled out (or will shell out) for your car, that's nothing. i'll just guess that you fill up 4 times a month, which is 48 times a year, which means you're saving a whopping $80 a year by using lower octane fuel than the manual says to use.

i don't know, but i prefer peace of mind and just filling up with 91/92/93 octane.
dude u have no idea how many macdonald meal you can buy with 80 bucks man!

tak_one_77 & YuriArts: Is your octane rating different (US) to others?
The octane values in the North America are calculated.
Octane Value = (MON + RON) / 2

In Europe and Australia only RON is used.
Octane Value = RON

Since the MON value is usually lower than RON, the Octane Value in the USA is typically 87 Octane (regular), 89 Octane (midgrade) and 91 Octane (premium).

In Europe the equivalent would be 91 RON (normal, though rarely available), 95 RON (eurosuper) and 98 RON (superplus).

Take care,

Siepel

Octane is not majic girlz.

We have a high compression engine. This requires 91 oct. You can use lower octane because the knock sensor retards the timing... up to a point. RTFM and you will see that Honda doesn't advise going to low octane except if you have no other alternative (some f$#$@ places in S. Utah for example).

BUT, higher octane is meaningless because the rate that the fuel burns at is lower than needed, marginally reducing power, but just fine to use.

Lap Dance & McDonalds types: if that is worth messing up your car to you, please sell it.

Most cars that say they require "premium" fuel, do not actually need it. HOWEVER, the S2000 is, in fact, one of the few cars that does need it to keep everything properly maintained. Something lower than 93 Octane would only go in my car over my dead body. 91 is acceptable if its what is available.

The owner's manual says, fuel lower than 91 will decrease performace. Fuel less then 86 will cause damage. Honda recommends high octane to prevent deposits.

The high octane is to prevent retarded combustion in the engine...

so if you go lower the timing will f**k up then you go have to repair your car for thousands of dollar while you save 80 buck a year, and that won't even add up to your damage..

If I ever see anyone pump lower grade to their S2000 out on the street, I'll come by and PUNCH you in the face and tells you to get a different car.

lol

I hesitate to say I support your reply, but I feel you are right. Completely stupid to put in lower quality fuel in this car.

If you can't afford to use premium gas, you can't afford to be driving an s2k.
