what would speed have to do with breaking in the engine? I mean going 30 at 4000 rpms is the same as going 70 at 4000 rpms isnt it?

I've never heard of a speed limit during the first 600 mi, only an RPM limit (+/- 5500).

I find it very hard to believe that everybody who got a new S2000 stayed under 50 mph and didn't drive on the freeway for 3 tanks of gas...

I suprisingly stayed under 50 mph for the first 800 miles. I did read the manual also.

I think that was about @ 2500-3000 rpm in sixth gear ? I dont remember. Than after that I went to 3500 rpm for about 100 more miles on freeway and 4000 rpm for 100 more miles, then 4500 rpm .. then 5000rpm 100 miles each.

after that I started ripping through gears ..

Dedicate a little extra time, and take back roads all the way. Problem solved.

My SLK 55 AMG manual told me to keep it down to about 4 or 5krpm for the first 2000 or 3000miles! And to keep it below 100mph...

Fascinating, Captain. Don't see how this applies to the S2K, though.

Your car would be doing 4000rpm at 75 mph in sixth gear, this is well under the recommended 5000 rpm limit during break in. Can you keep it under 75?

I'm from LA and I was thinking about buying my S up in the bay area - is it ok to drive it all the way home on the freeway? As I understand, when breaking in the s2000, you should vary your speed and not stay at any one speed for too long (ie. no long highway trips). Have any of you purchased your car far from home and drove it back? Does it REALLY matter? Thanks.

Jim
Take twice as long and drive Hwy 1, instead of 5 or 101 and it won't be a problem. This will ensure that you vary the speed and run through the gears and should be a blast with the top up or down.
