Holy Smokes! 2003 Accord Sighting!
I still can't believe it--I'm still in shock! My girlfriend and I just got back from Inlet Harbor restaurant in Ponce Inlet, Fl (just south of Daytona). In the parking lot were two 2003 Accord test mules--one of them a black coupe and the other a white 4-dr sedan. Both were beat up (lots of scrapes and dings on the bodies; the coupe had a big dent on the trunk lid). Both were devoid of emblems and badges and had nose masks and tape covering the tail lamps for camouflage. In the back seat of each car there was some kind of black box (telemetry unit?) with plugs and wires coming out of it--the sedan even had a fire extinguisher in it (those engineers sure are confident). Each car had a strange little inch-long spring attached to the exterior of the car in the passenger side just forward of the side mirrors--an ambient temperature monitor?
Some commentary on the cars--the coupe is awesome. I've seen spy photos on the internet and they don't do it justice. Lean, muscular, with a gorgeous interior. (Aesthetically, the door handle seems positioned slightly low on the door, though). The sedan, however, is quite unattractive--it's hard to describe, but I'd say it looks like what would happen if a new Altima and a late-model Saturn sedan got blitzed and hooked up. Unlike the coupe, with cool Mercedes angular tail lamps, the sedan's tail lights are slim gunslits, kind of like the previous model Camry... overall the sedan is a boring, high-sitting 3-box. I was underwhelmed.
Both cars had leather and, as my girlfriend noted by decoding a sticker on the windshield, probably V-6s. Because of that, I suspect they are probably EX V-6s. Both had Navi systems, so expect that to be an option or standard on the leather EX V-6. The Coupe had a 2002 S2000 shift lever, so at the very least it was a manual--possibly a 6-speed.
It was dark and I felt a little awkward standing there in the parking lot drooling, so we went in to the bar and I began asking groups of engineer-looking guys if "were the dudes from Honda". After I did that for a little while, I went back outside and the cars were gone. No one fessed up, but I think I might have smoked them out.
Man, that was incredible--I saw them, 3 months before public release. I love the coupe--and with a Nav system and a 6-speed, the S2000 may need a stablemate.
We didn't get a picture--like a UFO sighting, I was so dumbstruck that I forgot. But be on the lookout, Florida owners--there are '03 Accords in the area!
