Honda Needs to Raise the Bar
If anything, Honda needs to raise the bar with their Acura line. Lexus and Infiniti are kicking their ass. They need to get a V-8 in that line. As far as the S is concerned, it's good just the way it is. If Honda goes and builds an S2200 and it is a coupe with 250 hp and a little more torque, that would probably make it much better than our S. Due mainly because it will have better aerodynamics and should be lighter than the S. So many people complain because the 350Z has 287 hp, but weighs a lot more than the S does. When Nissan comes out with a convertible S, it will weigh even more and probably won't do near as well cornering.
I repeat, the S is good just the way it is.

I really don't think many of you understand or appreciate Honda's whole corporate philosophy: high reving, low emissions, and very fuel-efficient engines that extract maximum power out of small displacement. This company is not into horsepower wars, which are all the rage now, but the minute the next energy crisis hits, will fall out of favor in a flash. Then all the manufacturers will be trying to emulate Honda.
God bless Honda! They're one of very few auto companies building cars for a green planet.

Here's something to think about, nasty... If Honda did what you suggest, and started selling beefy RWD Civics (at affordable prices), consider the havoc that'll result. Think how many more crashes there'd be out here.
We've got our share of S2000 owners who've screwed the pooch by breaking the rear loose. Dial that inexperience (and, yes, occaionally immaturity) up another order of magnitude with Civic drivers, and you've got a serious problem on your hands if you're Honda, not to mention a nightmare for the insurance companies.
I guarantee that the guys who compute the insurance rates for these cars would quickly make it prohibitive to own one. Thereby defeating the whole purpose.
I think Subaru's appoach of giving lower-cost AWD performance is a good equation. Most drivers can probably handle this.
I don't know... Part of me would like to see Honda build more high-end sports cars, like Dario suggested, perhaps under the Acura line. But I fear the effects of a killer RWD Civic, nasty...

Look at how many S2000s are being crashed now due to young, inexperienced drivers thinking they're cool in an S. Imagine the carnage if the engine were any more capable than it is now?
The S2000 was never intended to be the fastest car in its class. There's much more to a fine automobile than how fast it reaches 60 or how quick its elapsed times in the 1/4 mile are. If Honda raises the bar a little with the next version of the S, so be it, but it certainly doesn't need to.
If you want a dragster that oozes HP and torque, go buy that Z06 you have your eye on.
