Default How come stooks don't drag?

went to Raceway Park yesterday to check out IDRC qualifying runs, was really hoping to see some S2000's tear it up in the bracket runs, but not one ran! I was really disappointed as I was looking forward to hearing that VTEC scream on the track. Yes I do own one, but I am not one of those that drop at 7000rpm, so my 1/4's would have been shameful. There were some cool stooks on display, met Sam Yau, what's up Sam.

So basically, Supras ruled the day. Three different Supras were consistently running 12's and 13's. There was a gold? M3(E46) but that guy was running 15's for some reason. There were like 30 integras and civics most running in the 14's. One stealth integra ran a 12.7, pretty impressive.

Anyways as this was my first time at the track, I was in awe of those outlaw class cars. Saw one of them run a 1/4 mile in 7.55 seconds at 163mph! Talk about a launch..

If there any stooks that drag in the northeast (at a track), please post when and where, I'd like to check it out.. also is the tri-state area ever having a meet or drive?

Why Stooks don't drag:

7000rpm clutch-drops are not good for differentials, clutches, and long-term mechanical wellness

I think the answer to your question is complex. Here is my try:

1. Some do drag their cars but the number of S2000s in total is quite small so you will find very few at any given event if at all.

2. Very few people bought the car with the intent of dragging. 1/4 mile is not the S2000 strongest suit. There is not as much low-end torque as most dragsters and thus it makes getting off the line consistantly difficult.

3. The best 1/4 mile time I've seen is low 13s on an S2000 with NOS. Without, high 13's can be had but low 14's is the norm.

I do drag my S2000 evey once in a while just to see my own times but the S2000 is not a dragging car, owners who simply drag the S2000 are missing out. the S2000 was designed for the track where it rules supreme. After taking an S2000 to the track you'll scoff at a drag strip.

That new Camero SS spanks me on a drag strip but I lapped him on the track.

exactly!
straight line, light to light performance is where the Supra is king and where the S2K's compromises become most noticable. if you want to drag - buy a supra (or a crx and mod it). but stick the S2K on a road racing track or on some nice backcountry twisties and it comes ALIVE.

While the S2000 is no slouch in a straight line, it was designed to excel at maintaining a high average speed over roads in the real world, a world of twists, turns, ups and downs. Sportscars, and sportscar racing, originated in Europe, where small displacement engines necessitated light weight cars that also handled well.

In America, the land of conspicuous consumption and cheap gas, the automobile became a status symbol, growing bigger and more powerful with each new model. These big, powerful cars were very impressive in a straight line, but offered little in the way of handling. Thus, drag racing was born.

You can probably thank the Camaro, Trans Am and the Mustang (in the hands of Carol Shelby) for changing the muscle car from a front-heavy, understeering pig into a reasonably balanced, good-handling performance car. However, even with the advent of better handling machinery, America has not lost it's love of drag racing.

I did not include the Corvette in my credit list because it has always aspired to be a sportscar. In the past few years I think the Vette has finally succeeded in becoming a full-fledged sports machine with great handling as well as American muscle, and a relative bargain, to boot.
