I put $2500 down and pay $475 a month for six years...I was lucky even to get an S2K considering my credit history.

Got Lice,

I would recommend waiting until you get a full time job. A few points to consider:

There is a strong argument to grow a cash reserve (usually several months pay) for those unexpected curveballs life tends to throw. $1000 clutch.... $550 for tires....lost job.....sued by the RIAA... things happen!

Secondly, insurance costs will eat you alive at your age. They have decades of hard data showing that young drivers are reckless (for various reasons). It does get a little better around 23-24-25 (I am almost 24).

Don't rush getting the car. Grow your bank account and just enjoy the time leading up to it. Think of it as automotive foreplay.

I bought it used and saved more than $10K right there. Then I put money down and am paying $350 a month to pay it off.

Of course, I'm always tempted to trade it or sell it for a newer one. I really wanted an 02 or 03...and I like many of the changes on the 04 (except the lowered redline).

If I do trade/sell, I'll most likely try to find a mint 02 or 03 that I know I'll keep.

I cashed in one of my investments and paid it all up front. One less bill to worry about.

I'll let you know in 4 more years!

Actually I am leasing the car for 60mo. I put $1,000 down and am paying about $390/mo. I am saving my anual bonuses and any tax refunds I get. When the lease is up, I plan to renegotiate the residual and then pay it off.
