Default How do you answer this question?

This evening I had the top down on my way home from work. I was stopped at a traffic light when a neighbor who I haven't seen in quite a while pulls up next to me. We are both considerably past our 40th birthdays. My neighbor lowers his window and shouts to me, "Is that your mid life crisis car?". I looked at him and said, "Yes", and left as soon as the light turned green.

I answered him the way I did because I am sure that my reasons for buying and owning the S would have been lost on him. Still, I wish I could have thought of a smart/sarcastic reply to shut him up.

What would you have said?

I'll never grow old till I grow up. And I don't plan on growing up anytime soon. How do you feel?

I was 23 when I bought my S2K. Eveyone just kept saying, "It must be nice." I would just say "YEP!" and leave it at that.

Honestly I would have said, "No... I am still very young. When I am 90 and can't shift anymore then I will buy a Vette!"

I'm afraid, on the most part, people like that will never comprehend nor accept an explanation so I wouldn't even bother with one. It is an inadequacy of their lives, NOT yours.
Live life, be happy. If your friends and neighbors can derive that "warm and cuddly" feeling with the knowledge that you may be going through what THEY think is your midlife crisis, let them have that joy. I have several friends who are just like your neighbor. Whenever they here of me buying some semi-exotic, big buck car, they say, "Oh, there he goes again. Another mid-life crisis." And yet, they can't wait to catch me at home so they come over to see what I have in my garage. This doesn't make them any less my friends. I simply do what they don't have the "courage" to do (at our age). They could all buy cars 2-3 times the price of what mine cost.

I'd have said yes Even if it is your mid-life crisis car it's nothing to be ashamed about. I hope I can continue to afford having one mid-life crisis after another.

Tell 'em an "Any time in your life you're lucky enough to be able to own it *joy* car!"

And remember, the fact that it may not be "for" everyone, does not even threaten to diminish what it is for those of us who do appreciate it.

My answer to people like that is this.... Finally, in my life, I can afford to get something I've dreamed of since I was in my 20s, but couldn't afford anything like that. Now that I'm almost 50, I want to enjoy life, so I got something to satisfy that empty space in my life.
