Talking How do you guys drive it hard?

Hey guys, just wondering when you drive your S hard, how do you guys downshift (stupid question but I'm curious) Do you guys downshift to the previous gear, or do you skip a gear. eg: 4th to 2nd. Is this okay for the transmission? Thanks

sure i skip gears often on downshifts. i always double-de-clutch when skipping gears.

(commence the inevitable mass misunderstanding re: heel/toe;double-clutching;rev-matching;etc;etc...........)

I'm still on the verge of learning heel-toe, as for now when I really get the need I go from 4th to 2nd and it really does give a nice kick in the ass. Is it okay for the tranny and LSD though, that's my main concern.

Always revmatch. Usually in town or whatever heel-toeing is not necessary to rev match but in the twisties I always do. and when driving hard there arent many situations that I run into where I have to skip a gear downshifting. But if I do, I do what smurf said and double clutch: Clutch in > Neutral > Clutch out, Clutch in > shifter in gear > clutch out.

I don't skip gears. If you search you'll find a post by Woodwork somewhere on this site that mentions why skipping is a bad thing to do.

Skipping gears without revmatching is a problem. Skipping gears with rev matching does not harm the synchros.

However, to answer the question, I always row the gears if I have time. Shifting from 5->3 is a fabulous way to go from 5->1 instead. Say goodbye to your engine.

Also, my heel-toe timing is all practiced for going one gear at a time. It's automatic if I do that, but I have to think about it if I'm doing something unusual. And when I'm trying to set myself up for a corner, especially if I am trailbraking into it, I don't want to be thinking about anything I don't have to be thinking about.

I'm not talking here about cruising in sixth and then wanting to accelerate to pass somebody in third. I don't do much of that, since I don't generally drive the car on the street anyway. I'm talking about coming off a straight and into a corner on the race track. I always row the gears whenever possible, and it's almost always possible.
