how do you smoke head/tail lights.
First off...who's telling you to microwave your taillights?
Even if you bake them...taillights are a MAJOR P.I.T.A. to crack open and not break
Now, as for tinting them on the outside, a quick search of "tint +taillight" (after wading through ~ 9 pages out of love for you) yielded this...

I'm sure there are more thread from that search, but once I found the one for you, figured you could do the rest.
Good luck!

.....and I was just telling my wife the other day...."you know when I was a teenager we weren't too bright and used to cover over our headlights and taillights with black plastic covers to be cool! I'm so glad the trend turned to how bright can we make our lights". "that was about the dumbest idea we could have come up with"
To each their own but your lights are there for a good reason.....
If you do decide to do this, try using that static cling window tint (available at any auto parts store or Wal-mart) on the outside of the covers, that way you can take it back off any time you want. Use a hair dryer when applying it and you should be able to get around all the curves just fine.
Just my $.02
