The AC robs a lot of hp on any car.

something weird happened in this thread (well the original one), when I tried to reply it said it was locked, even though there were no indications of that even when I refreshed

Negcamber is absolutely right, and the AP1/AP2 debate in the other thread was just more of the same old BS we always hear from the unknowing fanatics.

Now let's lock this tread too and let the blind find someplace else to lead the blind.

I think Negcamber just wanted to revive the thread to respond to some of the AP1/AP2 ignorance we have to put up with here on S2kI so often. Probably a bad idea, but the ignorance needs to be put to rest, and I think his intentions were good. We all benefit when we seperate the opinions of the fanatics from the good information we get from the more knowledgable owners here.

A few days after I got mine I was driving and realized that it took off a little more sluggishly; not as bad as other cars I've owned, but, noticable. Couldn't figure out what was up till I saw the little green LED on the A/C all lit up... If you're cruising on the freeway it's not that big a deal, though if you punch it to get around someone you'll notice.

All in all not a big deal to me anyway since the top is down 90% of the time

It's not really a big deal around town, because all you have to do is give the car a little more gas or let it rev a little higher, and when you get into it hard, the compressor shuts off. It's different in a Miata though, especially with the first gen cars with their little 1.6l engine. No amount of throttle is enough to compensate for the power the AC takes, so if you want the car to move out reasonably well you have to either turn off the AC or floor it so the compressor disengages. Also, it takes so long for the first gen Miata to accelerate through the gear, even at WOT, that the compressor is sometimes off long enough for the front windshield to fog up.

I run with my top down all the time too (unless it's raining), but I also run the AC. I even run the AC when autocrossing or attending driving schools like Evolution. It has absolutely no effect on my times one way or the other.

While driving I've noticed the same effect from AC, in my prior 03, and now my 06.

Only...when you are significantly on the throttle the ac cuts off automatically so your lap times shouldn't be much different.

And I didn't say it was much more noticible in my car...I notice it just as much in an ap2 as the ap1. But maybe I am more sensitive to power loss...I can tell when the ac is on with just about any car that I drive regularly.
So the AC cuts off when you get "significantly" on the power in the S? If so, this would explain why in this car I have never noticed the AC taking significant power...

and you have not either according to this post

but you did feel power loss in an M3

now was this worth reopening the subject?
