How durable are these motors? Revving to 9k+?

I think what happens to a lot of people that are used to torque, get in the car and feel like they aren't going anywhere due to the initial butt dyno. I drove my friends M3 and as soon as I punched it, felt like it pulled hard.. but then didn't really get much faster and his car is about even with a lot of the S's in our area. Its a totally different experience but its good to hear you enjoy the car and understand it's purpose. Good luck with your purchase and hope you enjoy your stay here on the board.

What year M3? The E46's are pretty damn impressive both off idle and at their 8000 rpm redline. Those things usually run with me from a roll and can walk me ever so slowly above 90mph.

He has a 318ti with E36 M motor, interior, and suspension. It's pretty nice. A fun car to drive. I haven't been able to drive an E46 yet.

The S2000 engine is definitely built tough. There are a small percentage of owners who've had serious engine trouble, TA dude, but there seems to be little correlation to engine speed -- unless we're talking about overrevving! That's another story, and it only happens if you blow a downshift.

That's one very strong reason to get a compression test with a used S. It's not guaranteed to locate an overrevved engine, but I'd bet it'd catch most of them.

I thought the fuel cutoff was at 9k? If thats the case I'd think the only real way to over rev one would be if you went from 2nd to 1st instead of 2nd to 3rd?

For an Ap1, its 9,200 RPM, Ap2 its 1,000 less. And yes, a scenario like that. Lots of newbies do it.

I could see it taking some getting used to the shifts are super short in those cars, but I've been driving standards as my daily driver(s) for 5 years now and I've never had an issue with that. I've missed a gear but never made it into the wrong gear. I see how its possible though, I've been with friends when they've done it in trans ams, z28s etc. It was quite alarming, I thought we were gonna both go through the windshield. The LT1 car was unharmed but my buddy broke his LS1 twice doing it, bent the piss out of pushrods both times and on the second time bend a conecting rod.

shit I didn't know man, every honda my friends have had used a belt or chain and had to be done either 60 or 100k...my mazda was hte same way...I'm glad this one isn't like that cause thats annoying as hell.

I misshifted from 5th to 2nd, wanted to go to 4th. Rear tires locked up and I stepped on the clutch right quick. S2k still fine

e36 m3 engine - 240hp
e46 m3 engine - 333hp

oh I don't know what its called here but the bmw guys call what I did a money shift
