I'll buy that. But be advised that catching that second wag is often more critical than catching the first one.

I took a turn to fast.. spun to my right out of control.. slammed on my brakes and turned the wheel the opposite way.. i know.. im terrible.. i hit the curb at great speed.. fortunately my car was in perfect ondition and had all alignments done.. i know this is an extremely amatuer mistake but as it was happening i thought to myself.. "f*ck im gonna lose it anyways might as well try to slow down a little before i hit something"... my mistake.. (im now a disgrace to all s2ki members.. please forgive me )

I hope you are kidding bud. Please don't feel guilty about making a driving error. Learn from it and move on. No shame is called for.

To all: Thanks for the kudos on the topic. I have the flu and just had to discipline my daughter. Your kind sentiments seem to have lowered both my temper and my temperature.

BTW, I'm learning a lot too. I'd forgotten about "look where you want to go". It is another key point.

The people who've got the 'Aim For Where You're Going' principle perfected to a fine art are of course Rally Cross Drivers!

Yes, but they work in slow motion compared to higher grip surfaces.

This thread is amazing and very helpful. I'll admit I'm not a very experienced "driver" in the racing sense. But now that I've had the car for a while (and see all the fun others are having), I plan to take some drivers training. Do the instructor treat you like an idot if you go there as a novice? I want to start with the basics, but I'm sure most will have much higher aspirations at these events. I just have to start somewhere

When it rains again, I'm going to go and try some of this stuff in an open parking lot!

Thanks for all the tips everyone!!!!

...Thank you all for an extremely informative and educational thread. I will take the observations and insights I gained here and apply them to my everyday driving. I intend to try the skid pad concept and I will also be taking a DE course in January.

I come to this forum to learn as much as I can about my car, and this has been one of the few threads lately that has been worth reading.

Just to give support to Jim's advice about being smooth:

I'm about 60 pages into Ross Bentley's Speed Secrets and the words "smooth" has been encoutered about 10-12 thousand times! Similarly, he recommends "squeezing the brakes" and "easing the throttle." Sudden inputs of any kind are clearly bad. And btw, so far this is the best racing book I've read (compared to Secrets of Solo Racing and Competition Driving )
