How I got a new cylinder head...
Dedicated readers of this forum will know that last January I was one of the "lucky" folks who fell victim to the loose spark plug problem, on the road trip back from the Laguna Seca S2KCA event no less. Honda covered a warranty repair (flatbed to the local dealer, new plug/coil ass'y) in Palm Springs. We made it back to Dallas just fine after that, and in fact the car has been running well since then.
Last week, responding to the spark plug recall, I took the car in. The call came the next morning: "When we backed the #1 plug out, it stripped the threads on the cylinder head."
The theory is the Palm Springs dealer over-tightened the new plug/coil. According to my Dallas dealer, they would be checking with Honda to see if the warranty would cover either: a) new cylinder head or b) "helicoil" new metal into the stripped hole in the existing cylinder head and rethread it. (By the way, my car is a m/y 2000 with almost 40k miles, but the initial plug ass'y problem occurred at 34k miles.)
I made sure the dealer remembered to mention to Honda that I had bought 5 Hondas over the years, and that I was a card carrying member of the North Texas S2000 Club and the S2KCA.
Voila - new cylinder head. I should get the car back tomorrow, and hopefully it will be running fine. I assume it will have to go through something of a break-in period.
Anyway, thought you might want to know...
