Haha! This makes me feel much better, I noticed a rip in my top today, thinking someone might have stabbed the top with some object (vandals or some other crap) but it seemed like the top hook/latch might have also caused it! I'm glad (well not really...) that others have this problem hehe.
02' model year as well.

'02 model as well and my top just got torn in the same exact location i'm assuming the same way. I'm fighting with American Honda right now about it. Hopefully they will decide to replace this and possibly take this further by issuing a tsb or recall.

oh and has anyone had this same tear, and got a new top at no cost while out of warranty? if so, please list the dealer that did the work and approx how long ago. I think if i can get information that honda has already approved this work then i'm pretty sure my chances are a little better.

'01. Small tear. After a long drive with the top down, I have noticed that top seems to settle down in such a way as to induce tension right around the latch. I would think that if there's a way to adjust the "stop" at full down, that would alleviate this and prevent this problem, or slow the growth of the tear.

Anybody know if there are "stop" adjustments?

I had a hole on the passenger side and got it repaired.
I also also had wear marks in the areas you've mentioned. To prevent it from gettin worse, i applied some black silicon to strengthen the areas. It seems to be holding up fine.

Guys:

I have a recent tear (1-1/4") located just under where the driver-side latch
rests on the top when the top is completely dropped.

Pictures will be posted this evening and will be able to describe the location
better.

After playing with the top quite a few times, I am convinced it was a design
defect and this is bound to happen to most cars sooner or later. I went thru
the motions of dropping and lowering the top and I do close the latch just
before dropping the top, so that was not an issue. So, there is nothing I could
have done to create a tear there (due to location). Somehow the latch
may have pinched the top material when coming back up. Since that area is
pretty straight, Honda should have reinforced those areas (both sides) with
a patch of stuck-on vinyl or something.

My dealer has already refused any coverage on this saying wear-and-tear (I have
HondaCare Extended Warranty). I have spoken to a couple of places that repair
tops and as soon as they heard the description, they are asking me to buy a new
top and don't even want to see the car in person!!!

When I get the repair film (http://www.tear-aid.com Type-B), I am going to apply
it to the top and bottom of the tear area and the bottom of the other side so I can
at least defer the tearing on the other side.

I have also sent a letter to Honda Consumer Affairs.

So, does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks!

[EDIT - 06/15/06 : Pictures added]

I have an 06, returned today after warranty repair on the same tear! Sorry I didnt think to take pics! But I know who did! Go to the "tell Honda thread" your evidence is there pics and all!!!!

I know there are two knobs down in the top well that you can see and turn when the top is down, but I have no idea what they actually do...

I started getting wear in front of the first crossmember, so I added velcro tape there to cuchion the top. For good measure, I added tape under the latches too, jic.
