Mac: You're not a rocket scientist? Geez, I thought you wired the altimeter in that cool 3-tiered color combo!

In that case wouldn't it evaporate off as part of

Actually, heat or light doesn't have mass so it's weightless.

It would weigh less because heat rises.

So if you want to go faster, have the top up and the heat on.

I bet NASA doesn't use "your average gallon of paint". They've probably got some super cool NASA paint. You know?
I was in the Navy a while back and we used a super heavy black, rubberized, sonar absorbing paint for our submarine! That stuff was like 40lbs. a gallon!

Considering the probable aerodynamic benefits of the top up, and the better cooling from having the heat on, you probably WOULD see benefits from doing this.

I just thought I'd toss this little tidbit in there. I was watching some news program a few months ago talking about the airline business and they were mentioning the cost of flying a plane, etc. They mentioned how the paint affects it.

I just pulled this tidbit from the boeing website:

Typically, about 50 gallons of paint are used to paint an average 737. Once the paint is dry, it will weigh approximately 250 pounds per airplane, depending on the paint scheme
American Airlines is also the only company that essentially does not paint their planes. The weight savings alone means less fuel consumption...with as much as those planes are in the air and how much they carry..imagine the savings in a year...heck, 10 years! :-x

These guys should learn some creative engineering...they could etch their logos into the metal skin for a really cool effect, no paint necessary.
