You can add tape to the threads on the shifter.

I wrapped the threads with teflon tape pretty thick before installation. It has been tight ever since.

Get BLUE Locktite. Use a few drops on the threads and get the knob down as far as possible and then back it off until the pattern is where you want it. Let it dry for a few hours and you're good. The blue stuff is what you need because if you need to remove the knob, you can get it off with a sharp twist. HTH.

i do not think the teflon tape will do much in the sense of holding it down. and i think i would have to put so much to make it tight that the threads would not even seat well.

i think the loctite will work. i am just relying on the adheasiveness of the loctite for this method. anyone have any other suggestions?

whatever you do, DO NOT get RED loctite unless you really really like the knob and NEVER want to remove it

It would be pure luck if the Teflon tape happened to allow you to align the pattern. My guess is you're reading the useless instructions that come with the knob and I know that blue glue isn't one of the options. Don't worry about the instructions - the guys at Rick's don't follow them anyway - go with the blue glue.
