With a close-ratio box like this, I often skip 4-6 as well. I don't see any reason why it would hurt anything, as long as the engine is not lugged.

Why do it? It reduces clutch wear and optimizes fuel economy. Corvettes come with the 1-4 skip shift for that reason.

Mine doesn't like going from third to sixth. Anything else is fine.

Why do I do this? WOT in 1st and 2nd, and part of 3rd, then I'm going too fast...no need to keep up that pace in 4th and 5th when the speed limit is 55.

Also, the great thing about manual tranny is 'no rules'. Change it up and have fun...keeps things interesting.

BTW: I've always skipped gears in this fashion with no ill effects. ('88 CRX Si, '00 Jetta VR6, '91 Civic DX which is still on the original clutch at 122K)

Oops I forgot to list '79 Mitsubishi pickup and '87 Mazda B2000!

The condition he describes in that post is an extremely rare condition where you are shifting at redline up thru the gears and then skip a gear and drop down to 4000 rpms. He says that could cause damage.

I'm not sure that anyone in here is talking about shifting in the above scenario.

I can not say it any better. They do not make cars with gears of 1,3,5 for a reason

You take a specific situation and try to imply that it has relevance to this thread, and the context of the replies. Don't pull Woodwork into the abyss of muddle-headedness. Yes, "lots of people share bad information" - what bad infomation was shared here, other than yours?

I tried going from redline in 3rd gear to sixth once- yipes. Won't do that again. I think maybe I left part of sixth gear on the interstate.
