Default I Did It, And I Swore I Never Would...

Well I always tried to shift smoothly, yet swiftly, and not just jam it into the next gear. I was racing (READ: trying to keep up) with a small posse of motorcycles on the highway last night when I shifted from third to second at redline. Ouch. I pushed in the clutch immediately, and was in shock for a second. At first I thought I was grinding the gears but then it finally sank in, I overreved the engine.

I drove it home easy after that and no cels came up, and the idle was smooth. I did some researching on these forums and some people said the retainers can have a hairline fracture that could take months to cause a problem. Then I read a post where RED-MX5 (may he RIP) said ap2 retainers don't stretch, and if there is no immediate problem then you shouldn't have to worry (Click Here For Post).

I just went out to autozone and bought a compression test kit, and followed the instructions via the DIY/FAQ's thread. I got 245 psi all across the board. Should I have anything to worry about? Is it true that on an ap2, if no immediate damage occurs then you are in the clear?

Thanks for such an informative site!

Did the same thing the other day. I luckily realized it and pushed the clutch back in before i fully let it out. My rpms made it to about 6 so I think I am okay.

I did that twice on my old car (AP2). Boy was I pissed. No problems tho. Anyway, you can find out how high the over rev was and how long. A dealer who looked at my car for a trade-in plug it in because they were sure I tracked it (never did, and not sure why that mattered). They pulled an over rev of 9566 rpm for .4 secs.

this will only happen if you hamfist shifts. ideal position from 3rd to 4th especially if you are redlining is to either backhand from 3rd to 4th or place the palm of your hand a top the shifter and shift from 3rd to 4th.

You're probably alright.

Slow it down and learn to drive before pushing it like that. Good luck learning! It's one of the most fun aspects of a new car.

Your AP2 should be fine with the stronger retainers...if you had been in an AP1 you would be very unhappy right now.
