I have a question about feasibility
Let's be honest, what's the REAL percentage of possibility that your Corolla will ever leave you stranded? It's an appliance that should be faithful for MANY years longer than you will probably own it.
That said, my wife and I don't have kids yet but we found not too long after trading her 4-Runner for a G35 Coupe that we had no way to get all our little house projects back and forth. For this I bought a $900 old Mitsu pickup truck that hauls our bikes, dirt, mulch, furniture, etc......... Not a complaint to be heard.
It's not too hard to talk yourself into an S if you are truely inclined to want it, just go for a test drive, by my 2nd it was mine
Good Luck
Edit: The previous post made it up while I was typing, but I agree with not bothering with the POS unless you have a use for it, I HATE driving my "Sh!t Getter" but it's a necessity for us at least a few times a week.
Regarding teaching her, I have one of those too. I tried teaching my wife to drive my S and it ends up she's scared to death of the car, mostly I know because I have such an attachment to it but still....

Sigh. I feel your pain, because I'm in the same position, only I don't have a kid. Married, three dogs, no kids.
My problem is I'm too practical to give up my car. I've got a 2004 Accord Coupe, and my wife drives an Odyssey. I gave up my truck for the Accord last spring because I wanted something (1) newer, (2) room for four (the Odyssey transports dog crates -- only has the front two seats in), (3) better mileage, and (4) more sporting. Now, i love my Accord ... but I've been lusting after an S2K ever since I bought it.
My wife thinks I've gone crazy, 'cause I want the S2K as a third car -- so I can keep the Accord for daily driving and when I want to haul a little more people or cargo, but don't want to unpack the van. Never mind that there are only two of us and we move every 2 years or so (military) so owning three cars seems silly. I can't convince myself to give up my Accord, but I can't yet sell myself on dropping 30k to buy a third car outright, either (and don't want to take on another payment).
But I keep swinging by the Honda dealer to see if the Silverstone, two Berlinas, and 2 NFRs are still there. Someone please cure me of this obsession ...

Wow, how many guys do I know who can't get a car like the S because their wife won't let them. Get the S while you still can!
Have someone make it child safe with an airbag switch, and you'll be good to go. On those odd occasions wher eyou need another car, I've found renting to be an economical solution.
I got the S now, while I'm single, with the expectation that once I'm married and have kids, I'll be able to by a more sensible auto rather than sell the S.

In my opinion, S2K is not a very practical car especially with a little one. You will have plenty of opportunity to drive a nice convertible when your baby is somewhat older. For now, safety is the key issue. If the S2K is strictly for commuting, then there is no problem. I would recommend a decent SUV for winter driving as well as to haul things around. You should definitely consult with your wife and have her full fledged support for buying this toy. When I bought mine, my wife was all for it. She got to pick the color though.... I had my heart on SPA yellow since I drove a yellow Triumph Spitfire when I was in college. but I had to give in. I love Sebring Silver. Good luck!
I've got two girls, 4 and 8. We have a Mazda Protege 5 for hauling them around. My wife was the one who convinced me that the S would not be inconveniant (I used ot have an EP3). She's a stay at home mom, so dropping the kids off (lol) isn't a problem for her. She's a great girl and really enjoys seeing me happy (same goes for me), so even if there is a small inconveniance every now and then, she doesn't complain. She's just cool like that. She likes cars about as much as anyone else I know and often watches car videos or shows and reads my Option mags when she's bored.
So I guess you should have a discussion with your better half and make sure this is a good decision. I hope you two decide it is. Its not that big of an inconveniance honestly. And the fun you two will have on those get-away weekends when the kids are at granma's will be worth it. Good luck!

I've got a 4 month old and it is no problem at all. We got a WRX wagon for the family car (replaced Dakota 4x4) and my wife is now planning her mods, lol! I came very close to selling my S but decided to keep it. It turned out I got a job that came with a company car anyway but even if I didn't I still would have kept the S, it's more practical than people give it credit for.
Oh yea, I drove mine through 2 upstate winters and it performed beautifully. Snow tires are the key.
