It's okay, I still remember my first time on my GTI. I still can do it pretty smooth from 5th to 2nd off the highway.

Oddly enough, I can't nail it on the Toyota Yaris though... sigh.

It's like getting smooth shifts and launches. Once you relax a little it's so easy it leaves you wondering why the heck it ever gave you problems.

It's also like walking. No matter how good you are at it or how much you practice, you'll still trip once in a while.
Relaxing and not over-thinking it is key.

To be honest it is kind of a releif to see some others have to practice it also. I thought I was the only one not getting it.

Thanks for all of the replies.

It really is, and this applies to a lot more than shifting and double (de)clutching. Before I start an autocross run I take a deep breath, and as I let it out I try to get my whole body to relax. If I'm not completely relaxed afterward, I'll do it a second or third time until I do get totally relaxed. As long as I can maintain the relaxed condition my run will usually flow smoothly and I'll turn respectable times, but if I tense up, my times suffer.

Shooting is the same way. You can't shoot well when you're all tensed up.
Bowling too.

Probably applies to most physical activities that require precision.
