A clicking sound when you try to start a car that won't start usually means that there is insufficient electrical power coming from the battery to the starter to do the job. This can be the result of either a battery that is discharged, or a poor connection (usually where the cables connect to the battery, but not always). A battery can be discharged either because it is worn out, or because it has been drained by something like leaving headlights on while parked.

My battery did this after my warranty had expired. I took the battery to an auto supply store to be tested and yup, it was worn out after about 4 1/2 years of service. A new battery cost between $50 and $60 for me.

If the battery is discharged but upon testing will hold a charge, and you know that you didn't do something like park with headlights on, the problem could be a defective alternator or a short in the car's electrical system.

I have always heard that if you hear clicking while trying to start your car, the starter contacts have gone bad.

Clicking, 99 times out of 100, is just a lack of amperage to turn the starter motor.

Cold kills batteries. Fact. Bet any money it's the battery.

The clicking represents a low charge battery that won't supply enough juice to the starter. The clicking is nothing else but the ignition solenoid. Just jump start your car with someone elses and let your S charge the battery.

Seems the person with the problem has moved on.
