I just got mine yesterday. I'm going to pick my brand new Red S2K this friday from Michigan (I live in Kentucky). I'll try the V1 on my way there on a one-way rental. That'll be the best test.
Keep us posted on how you install yours. So far I think Loki's is the best one.
This is for Loki, did you use the visor clip or the suction cups? I don't see that well in the picture (looks like suction cups but not sure).

Chuck-

I think I can do it tomorrow. I've got a 3:00 meeting. Should be back here by 5:30 or so. Lets plan on it and if things change I'll call you! See you here at 6:30.

I've sent my money in and made my reservations! I think Brendas coming to. How about your wife? I'm sure Brenda would love the company.

See you tomorrow evening!

Mack,

Great move on the V1! You won't be diasppointed. Get used to the different alerts/sounds. For city use, small L mode I find is best. Have primary alert set at 7-8/10 and the mute setting (second volume knob on the outside of the big volume knob) set to 3-4/10.

As for placement, on the steering column is ok so long as you can comfortably see the display and reach the mute button WITHOUT having to put your hand THROUGH the steering wheel! Seems simple to make this point, but it is often overlooked. You want to place the remote mount where you can reach it easily. Probably on the left side of the dash binnacle (inside it, not on top).

Placement for the detector itself is best to the RIGHT side of the rear view mirror, up high against the windshield header bar. That way, it will be concealed as much as possible, it won't ruin your (already) small field of view and you won't have to have the remote power wire travelling down the windshield! Also, being up higher, you'll have a better position for rear laser detection and front detection (as the Stook is already lower than most cars).

Good luck and enjoy your new-found insurance!

Sounds like a plan to me I'll see ya around 6:30.

Yes, Petie is coming to Ashville with me. We're still trying to decide if we will stay both nights though.

I have no regrets about getting the V1. For radar in front it is pretty much a toss up between the Passport 8500, the Bel 980 and the latest model of the V1.

The V1 is the only one with a rear facing antenna. This does make a difference. For example, on my drive to work, there's a radar emitting stop light. It uses radar to detect when cars are on the side street so it decides whether to change or not. However, when I approach it with the detector sensing, a police car can come up behind me with another radar source and "nail" me for doing 32 in a 30 mph or for doing 22 mph in a 20 mph. The V1 however, sees the radar behind and alerts me!

If laser matters to you, the V1 had by far the widest reception angle and that makes a difference.

For some impartial data to substantiate my statement that the V1, the Passport 8500 and Bel 980 are all pretty much equal read the Passport review at http://www.speedzones.com .

I have another question. Out of the new detectors, which one is best at hiding itself from the Stalking radar. I think that is what it is called. It's not real important to me since I live in NJ, but my parents live in TN, which means a 350 mile trip through Virginia each way, where it is illegal to have a detector. Supposedly the V1 is the best, but I was wondering if anyone KNEW any better. Thanks.

Erik,

I don't know which one was the best in terms of 'undetectability', but I know that the V1 was completely immune to the VG2 detector-detector.

Actually, with regards to having an 'illegal' detector in a state that does not allow them (Washington DC is one I believe), I have been led to believe the police cannot and will not prosecute you if you have a detector in a car that has out-of-state plates. One guy in the corvetteforum said that he was sitting right next to a cop car in DC and the cop was looking 'right at' the detector. But the cop wouldn't book him because he had out of state plates.

That's only what I heard, not the law. Might pay to get some proper legal opinion on that!

Cheers,

Thanks Sime,

I'll have to check that out about being out of state. Anyone have an idea where I might be able to look this up? I have heard some bad stories about Virginia cops actually destroying the radar detector right in front of the owners. That might be crap, that's just what I heard. Virginia folks, any of this true?
