I was right about the 2002 having a subtle VTEC experience

I broke in my '02 per the book without fanfare and went VTEC at the 750-mile marker. It felt like I was kicked in the rear by the foot of God. Now with the PRM and Tanabe, when 6000 rpm's arrive, the sound and push of the car is nothing short of amazing. I liken it to a thrill ride at Six Flags. The word "gradual" is not in my car's vocabulary so maybe it comes down to engine tolerances and type of break-ins?

I have an '02, first oil change was a week ago, and I have about 4,500 miles on the car. The break-in I did on my car was very conservative and gentle, there was no VTEC until the car had about 650 miles and then the RPMS were increased very gradually as the miles were added. The car had 19 miles on it when I picked it up and 12 of them were put on by my dealer and I know the car was not VTEC'ed.

Keep in mind the VTEC jump is less noticeable each time you go to a higher gear. The jump in 1st is like a jump into warp drive, whoa! The VTEC jump at second is very noticeable but not quite so much drama. The jump at third becomes rather subtle, but you can hear it and there is obviously more power going to the road!

I read this thread and got a
Sounds like lots of people really believe the engine is still at break in at the mileage I have and will only get better. Cool!

My car's VTEC before I got my Spoon header was very pronounced (and enjoyable). Immediately after I installed the header, it was far more subtle, but clearly had more grunt in the mid-range. Don't know if this is normal or not.

I don't think it is break-in quality as much as it is manufacturing variables. I have driven 3 different s2000s (no 02s) and 2 had a nice kick in the pants at 6000 (mine included), and the other felt like it was wheezing up to 9k. Mine feels strong, and the vtec kick is VERY noticeable even when it is hot outside. I bought my car with ~60 miles on it (probably 60 hard miles), drove it softly to 550 and haven't stopped vtecing since. There was a time when it felt slow and soft. At 13,000 miles, it feels stronger than it ever has. Here are two links of similar discussions.

I had my dealer look at my car because of erratic vtec engagement. Some times it was hard...other times the car felt sluggish and rpm's did not climb quickly. It turns out that I had a defective solenoid. Ever since, vtec is hard and rpm's climb quickly in every gear.

Keep in mind that Vtec is variable. Like the others said, you generally have to be accelerating quickly. Vtec also has many other variables that it takes into consideration not just engine rpm.
