I scream rape!!!
Do it over the phone. Why waste your time traveling around and dealing with dealerships. Figure out exactly what you want for options and hammer the phone. I got a great deal on an 03. Had to make a lot of phone calls though.
I had dealerships laugh at me and finally got one that did the deal. If they sell one early enough in the season it helps their supply later in the year. They would rather make a $1 now and get credit for a vehicle sale. Consider that if it is early enough in the season Honda will send them another one to sell.
Also, make your best deal without talking trade and straight cash. You can always go back and add those factors in after you get the bottom line. Be prepared to pull the trigger. You'll get your best deal towards the end of the month on an in stock car that you can take delivery on! Not sure where you are from but up here in New England I have found that I always get the best deal on a very dreary, cold day.

For our last purchase, a 2002 GMC Envoy, we took this route and visited dealers. Three dealers let us walk out of the dealership after they, too, said we were thousands out of their league. Finally, we found a dealer over the phone that gave us a price a few hundred dollars above invoice. I'd rather not waste the time or gas to drive all over the southeast to find a reasonable deal.
Being from Raleigh, I was in the same predicament. I ended up following the advice on this board and looking out of state for a good deal in the snowbelt. I bought my '03 Silverstone/Black from a dealer in Cleveland, OH for $30,500 (no spoilers, though). As the dealer told me, "It's hard to sell a convertible when there's a foot of snow sitting on it!"

The way I got the price I wanted on my previous car ('02 Acura RSX Type S) is this:
I called about 10 Acura dealers in Western Canada. I let them all know exactly what I wanted, and said that by 5 PM I would be buying from the dealer that gave me the best deal on the car.
By 3-4 PM that day (I can't really remember), I had a couple of dealers that quoted me prices in the range I wanted to be in (this was back when the RSX Type S was MSRP, no deals).
It worked out great. I ended up getting my RSX for a price that at the time, seemed impossible to get.
I'm sure that the same tactic could work for any car.

Try dealers in the NE (NYC, BOS, DC). After all the show, they will be looking to unload any and all drop tops. Also if push comes to shove you might have to give up color choice to get the deal you want. There are only about 10k s2k's imported every year so comparing the s2k to the Envoy is senseless, it is a sellers market for the most part.
