I think S2000's engine is too quiet.
I don't have a S2000. I test drove a '01 with 3500 miles, and while the S14 from my e30 m3 can't touch the 9000 redline, it sings far more beautifully.
As for the exhaust, I'm not a big fan of exhaust sounds.. You can slap a loud exhaust on a dodge ram... but it'd still sounds like crap.

Well not really. The stock intake muffles the sound of the engine as well as the intake noise. My intake is polished and as such makes less noise than the stock manifold with an intake (less turbulance=less noise, as intake noise is nothing more than air turbulance) I also have cams, higher tension valve springs and higher compression (12.5 :1) so my car does make a little more of an interesting engine noise as welll, even with the stock intake. When i say the engine is louder I mean the ENGINE itself is louder, not to be confused with a Civic with a cone filter. When running next to a couple other S2Ks this past weekend, my car sounded more high strung, and less sewing machine like. I also now have a cool whine as the revs go up (like the Ferrari). But that is a relatively modified engine.
Hope this helps clear things up

I have a custom CAI and an exhaust and at 9k EVERYONE within a mile can hear the scream!
