I think S2000's engine is too quiet.
Interesting that Christophorus, the very nice publication about Porsche, had an article about Porsche's indepth research into how their cars sound to the driver and occupants, and how they try to tune that sound to be appropriate for the performance experience. It stated that the intake location of the Boxster was chosen and tuned to benefit the driver's hearing of the engine. It was very interesting, as I'd thought that sound was secondary to the tuning of the car for performance and regulations, but by the article presentation, Porsche took how the car sounded very seriously.
The S2000's engine is one of the loudest engines made as far as when you are sitting in the cabin, however I had my friends listen to me rounding a curve at PIR in 2nd gear at 9K rpm and they said they could barely hear my engine. They compared it to the other 125 cars running that day and said it was one of the quietest. I believe them, the S2000 is not loud from the outside.
<--- thats me rounding the corner in 2nd at 9K rpm.
Now the Ferarri 360 that was running sounded horrible. It was not that loud and the engine actually sounds like a person is rattling pans as it drives by. I don

From the outside the Stock S2K is ABSOLUTELY SILENT from the outside (100+MPH drive-by). Sound great inside but makes only the sound of the wind on the outside......ask Yellow S2000. We sat in the still desert air of the Nevada Open Road Challenge waiting for the awe powerful stook to roll by. We then spent 5 hours driving home saying how quite it was...........
Engine sounds fine - it's just the exhaust that needs to be louder.
On this subject, I am reluctant to change the exhaust as I like the way it looks - i.e.the ends of the two pipes. Does anyone know how the exhaust sound could be improved (i.e louder) - without reducing performance - by drilling out the mufflers (or similar) and still retaining all the original system.
