impressive s2k mpg!
Because your engine will get up to operating temperature quicker. Engines aren't efficient when they are cold. Those who drive very short distances won't have enough time to warm up the engine properly, so blocking the grill is a cheap and effective. The problem is if you need to go somewhere far. I would do it for short trips, but not long ones. I live only 3 miles away from work so my car doesn't get warm enough and as a result, my mpg is crappy. I wouldn't do this mod though because there are times I want to drive far, but don't want mess around with the grill shield.

Might be a stupid question but why does blocking the radiator and increasing the heat increase mileage?
So I can't drive my S to/from work unless I'm driving like Ayrton Senna on the streets? To the point of the thread:
If I keep it under 70 on the highway, I can get 30-33, depending on other factors (temperature, road surface, altitude, etc...)
Okay, this is an accomplishment, however, I think the point the detractors are making is that such a concern is completely contrary to the point of this car. I couldn't care less about my MPG. I bought this car for the thrill of driving it. That said, I rarely do the VTEC thing (about once a day, I'll go through a couple of shifts in the mid/high 7s). I typically shift right below that transition, but other drivers seem to think I'm thrashing it – if they only knew
. The point made by the opposition is that this car was designed for spirited driving. We can't help feeling that one who transforms this machine into an MPG champ is depriving him(her)self of the joy this little mechanical wonder was engineered to deliver.
I don't give a toss about the rapid destruction of my rear tires either, and I certainly don't select them for the best possible fuel economy. I want grip and I want grip that gives itself up in a progressive manner. I don't care if that means higher rolling resistance. The car (referring to my CR) was delivered with a brilliant set of tires. They aren't cheap and they don't last very long, but I couldn't care less. Tires that yield longer life and higher MPGs wouldn't permit me to toss this vehicle around corners. It's a hell of a lot of fun to do. This thing was built to carve corners.
I understand that different people have different priorities. I'm a semi-retired, old fart who doesn't owe anyone a penny (one of the few upsides to being older). I appreciate that pecuniary limitations are practically ubiquitous these days, but I also think that there are better ways to achieve this objective – although, I doubt there is an alternative that would look as nice (while offering the pleasure a convertible provides). I guess I understand, but, in a way, I really don't.

I can't believe only one person in this thread actually read that page and noticed that he REMOVED the grill block because temps were too high. I know it's confusing because the pic shows it blocked, but he isn't running it that way.
