I'm pretty new to the S2k scene, so hopefully this isn't too dumb a question...

I see a lot of people dropping upwards of $1k on dual exhaust systems that provide little to no HP gain, just to get a better sounding exhaust. Couldn't the same effect be achieved much more cheaply by simply replacing the mufflers? I suppose you miss out on saving a few pounds, but that hardly seems worth the added cost. What am I missing here?

Plenty of people have done this. Works fine and the rear OEM mufflers account for a good part of the weight of the system.

 

I don't think the fact it's not a Civic is any reason to not do this.

I think it's a fine idea. Just because it's an S2K doesn't mean we should piss money into the wind. I hope that for being an S2K, the owners are intelligent and wise with their investments, hence owning the car in the first place.

 

i've always wondered about that.. b/c there really aren't any gains to factor in, you are spending money on looks, which you would get from changing the mufflers.. that's why i've been so hestant to purchasing a full exhaust.. the price tag doesn't seem to justify just getting some weight reduction, looks (which you could get by changing the mufflers) and sound (by changing the mufflers?).. There has to be more reason mechanically/performance to spending the money? Realize that if i had the cash, i would be on that GB for the Fuji Legalis, but since i'm strapped for cash, i'm just searchin other alternatives for the look and sound.. so i'm not bashing spending the money though

 

You can get a cat back exhaust for the S for as low as $400 new if not even lower. I would look at buying a USED exhaust before going to a muffler shop, chopping off the mufflers and adding a fart cans...

If your going to customize the system for example like for a turbo or FI setup, then maybe a custom 3" is in order.

But the cost of 2 mufflers and the labor of installing them will cost at LEAST $250. Why not save a pay check or two.....wait a month or two.....and buy a system made for the car.

single exhausts are functional, especially when you get a 3" or 4" system that is suitable for forced induction.

Someone local to me just cut off one of the stock mufflers and sealed the hole - it sounds fantastic - we call it the OCK.5

If I still had my S I would have done it.
