Default Insurance Claim: Seats Slashed

A few days ago, between the hours of 8PM and 5AM, my seats were both slashed. My top was left down because I forgot to put it up when I got back from eating lunch/dinner with my friend. I woke up around 4:50AM and remembered I left it down, so I ran out to my car to put it up, to find my seats were both brutalized

They didn't just slash the leather. It seems that they actually stabbed the seat and made a few rather large gashes in both the bottom and back portion. Needless to say, I was pissed off and damn near wanted to cry.

I called the police and filed a report as well as made a claim with my insurance company.

When the claim was reviewed, I was called and asked if I would like to go to one of their shops or if I would rather choose where I wanted it taken.

I really don't know how it's going to work, as I've never had anything like this happen before. I would really like both seats replaced with brand new OEM equipment, including the padding and the leather bits. I'm worried though that the insurance company will deny me, due to the seats being so god damned expensive, even though my policy stated I have the right to choose what equipment is going to be used to replace what was damaged.

Has anyone had a similar experience? If so, could someone please shed some light on this subject. The claims rep. is supposed to be coming out tomorrow or Saturday and I sure as hell don't want to get low balled (so much so, that I may not even be able to buy new seats). Please help

As far as I know they will find USED OEM replacements. Buying the new padding will be too much money and more than likely will drive up your rates. Again, this is what I hear from other posts over the course of the years on S2Ki.

They will put you in pre loss condition. Ive never heard of a policy that allows you to choose your parts? The wear on the seat bolsters will be evident along with your mileage. They will likely locate seats in the same condition or they may replace the padding and covers sicne they come in separate parts you may get some new.

My car has around 55000 but my seats were in damn near perfect condition. The driver's seat, of course, has some wear to it as it should. The passenger seat though, is a different story.

I'm pretty bummed out now. I suppose if they won't pay for both seats in their entirety, then hopefully they can just cover the leather bits and I can get a shop to fix the padding.

I really don't know though, as this has never happened to me and this situation has me somewhat flustered.

Here is what my policy states:
"By law, you have the right to select where your motor vehicle is repaired and the parts used for repairs. However, an insurance company is not required to pay more than a reasonable amount for such repairs and parts."

You could get racing seats instead if you wanted.
You get the estimate from shop on what the repairs/ replacement will cost.
Insurance will cut you a check for that amount & you can use it to go buy whatever seats you want.

I will probably call Clear Lake Honda tomorrow and get a quick quote on the leather bits and the install, as well as the cost to repair the foam padding. I'm a little fuzzy on the whole racing seat thing though. I really enjoy my stock seats

As much as I like the stock leather, you do have to realize aftermarket leather from a quality install is significantly higher quality than the OE leather. Find a really good upholstery shop, and have them do it for you.
