Insurance on the S2000
I am considering buying an S2000 next summer, and have everything planned out ahead of time so I don't run into financial bumps. Anyways, I got back from my Liberty Mutual today, my current insurance company, and they quoted me rough estimate of an extremely high ridiculous rate of $4500/yr, including most of the coverage options. So I told them to take out everything optional but leave comprehensive and liability, but it lowered it to $4200 only. WTF?? I know this is a very expensive car to insure, but $4000+??
I am a 20yr old guy, no accidents, no tickets, been driving since 16, with excellent grades. I'm getting some more quotes in the next few days from other insurance companies, but I want to take a little poll on what you others are paying for this car, given age/sex/traffic history/insurance coverage plans, and also, company. I need some suggestions on how to get this as low as I can get it, since I will shell out a megaton for this S2000 to begin with.

Being 20 years old any car is going to be expensive. Are you going to be on your own policy? My is $95 a month. Its only $20 more than when I had my integra. and I am 27 clean history. I am with state farm. Try other insurance companies. Also do you have a long insurance history?
20 yrs old/no accidents/no tickets (knock on wood).....$919 a year

my advice would be to shop around extensively. Sit down and talk with a broker, there are TONS of tiny discounts you can get that eventually add up to a substantial discount.

Actually, the cost of the insurance pushed me over the edge into buying the S2000. I thought for sure the cost would be what you quoted Thoe99, but happily found it to be what the other posters have said. I am 45 with clean record and mine costs about $775 per year. That clinched the deal right there. Since the cost was actually LESS than for a new CIVIC (figure that one out?), I went with the S2000. My company is AETNA, and I have been with them since I started driving, many moons ago. lol
I would definitely shop around to get quotes. I live in NJ, where car insurance rates are the highest in the nation, so I'm surprised at the cost you got quoted. Seems to be excessively high. Good Luck!

That's clearly the problem, you are a 20 year old guy. I'm paying about $700, same as on a 'normal' car. Here's a deal: I give you my bald spot and 63 year old lumbar disks plus $4000 per year in exchange for your 20 year old head of hair and strong young spine. Deal? I knew there had to be some advantage to getting older.

Unfortunately it's because you are under 25 and male - not because of the car. I have four Vettes + the S2000, and although my son did not drive any of these vehicles - he still had to be covered 'in case he ever did'... Needless to say, my rates were sky high until he reached 25.
My S2000s have been no more expensive to insure than any other car I have.

Hey Matt, can you tell me how you possibly got that nice of a deal? There has to be some catch to it. Do you just have liability?

im 20 year old male... and before the i got my s2000 3 weeks ago.. i had a 99 accord 2 dr ex v6.. and my isnurance went down 600 bucks... i pay 2800 a year on my s2000 with lotzzzzz of tickets.. :-).. so i guess im not doin so bad... :-)
I think the rates have a lot to do with where you live?
Based on the 2 folks here that's 20 years old, one lives in Houston and the other lives in Ogden.. I'm sure there's a big difference in the population sizes.
The more crowded the city, the higher likelihood for theft, accident, etc. so the higher the chances in claims and stuff... its all statistics.
The only major discounts I've heard are for
a) 5 yr. accident free
b) Getting married (but that may cost more in the long run!
)
c) Turning 25 ...
... I had an accident when I was about to turn 21.. so I"m waiting til I turn 25 AND for my 5 yr. accident free discounts to kick in before I make a purchase for an s2k.
Its the waiting that sucks.
Right now, I'm paying $2700 / yr. (CAD) for a Honda Civic 4 dr.
