sorry..dumb question.. but what does SSM and SSX stand for and what does it mean?
As Trip said SSM was Sport Study Model, this then went closer to production and name testing and became SSX, all Honda did was drop the Model and add an X, X has been used by Honda in the past for "lower quantity" production models, thus CRX and NSX.

ah man, that ssm look sick. love that design.
I think for myself the one major characteristic that I loved was the super low placement of the headlights next to the grille, to me this is what makes the SSM so damn hot. Take a look at the whole car in front of the windshield. The fact that the headlights do not interupt the top lines of the hood and the fenders the whole front of the car appears to be longer. And to this day, one of the most beautiful cars ever penned was the Jag XKE, and the hood on that thing is one of its best characteristics.

And as a dedicated CRX guy here is a bit of trivia as it applies to the revised placement of the headlights ont he S2000 production model. When Honda realeased the CRX into North America they actually had to have one of the US departments (I think it is DOT) change one fo their requirements. The headlights on the CRX were closer to the ground than any pother car, thus Honda had the "minimum height from the ground" altered slightly to get the CRX approved for US consumption. I suspect they learned a lot over that little issue and just plain decided to move the headlight up on the S2000.

Doesn't Honda's Moto GP bike have a V5?

Sorry for jacking the thread, but I am pretty sure that's what it has. I am sure that back then that was pretty hard to imagine.

Headlight position is interesting, but IIRC, the center of the headlights need to be 22" off the ground. The only reason I know that is that the cops use it to harass ricers who drop their cars. Most subcompacts have their headlights exactly at the minimum at stock height. So if you drop the car - Hey! Instant probable cause!

24400 VC.....Headlights must be between 22 and 54" from the ground to the center of the light.

24402 VC.....Driving/Passing lamps must be 24 to 42" from the ground.
