Interior of car... completely soaked in gasoline
The pumps should have a check valve to avoid pressure build up. They should also release the lock automatically when the person is done filling the tank. I'm sure there is a number for the group that monitors gas station saftey requirements. If not call OSHA and they will be able to point you in the right direction. Either way that's dangerous and not normal for a gas pump.
Good luck

WOW! I can see how that happened. Simply unreal however. You must be beside yourself.
I noticed that you have a NEW 2005 S. Geeeze... what a prank (vandalism) that happened to you while you were inside the gas station (hint hint). I would certainly have the entire interior changed out. That petrol smell will never really go away unless the interior is changed out.
Good luck and don't light a match in your car!

No idea what you should do but I can tell you that smell will NEVER go away.
Sorry to hear it man. How do you pressurize the hose?!? If hold the lever down gas comes out. It sounds to me like the pump was defective. There is no way i can think of this happening without the pump being broken.

You need to talk to the gas station owner about this incident first. Your insurance company will also be able to give you advice.
you basically need to REPLACE everything (carpets, seats).
Good luck! Sorry that this had to happen to you

The gas station should be held liable for their pumps. The owner should pay your deductable as well as compensation for loss of resale value and compensation for your having being soaked with gasoline.

You will be surprised on how fast gas shoots out of those pumps, the gas can easily fly 4-5 ft.
I'm glad that silly, plastic, faux metal, poke-in-the-knee when opened, S2000 logo festooned cover for the stereo worked as a pretty handy backsplash, though.
This is definitely the gas stations fault for lack of equipment maintenance and repair. All pumps have an automatic shutoff and should disengage the lock when the pump is turned off or not in use (unless they're using pumps from the 70's). Even if you hold the handle down yourself and turn the pump on, it should disengage and click as a safety feature.
Not saying you should get lawsuite happy, but atleast contact a lawyer that might be familiar with gas station regulations and your rights in this situation. Contacting a lawyer doesn't mean you need to sue, but a letter to the gas station owner with an attorney's letterhead definitely helps deliver a point.

Well, I'd first go over to ricks2k and order their premium carpet replacement.
Then I'd go over to ebay and search for s2000 seats for sale.
In NJ, its actually illegal to pump your own gas.

I think the gas station should bear some resposibility due to the fact that their pumps can be easily tampered with. They are not exactly providing a safe environment when their pump triggers can be left on 'auto' whilst sitting in the bowser unused. In my eyes that is a major design flaw.
