So I'm headin south on I-37 out of san antone, not even speeding or anything, when this truck about 12-15 car links ahead of decides to swerve onto the shoulder of the road kicking up rocks. Of course one of them hits my windshield *BAM!* even though i made a very evasive move to the right lane in attemts to avoid it. Well, I saw no damage so i continued on to a friends place. About 2 hours later, he was showing me his new Honda Element and we were comparing engines, when he says, "Oh, you got a cracked windshield huh?"
I was pissed! I guess from sitting a couple of hours in the texas heat, the small chip at the base of the windshield where the rock hit had turned into this 12-14 inch crack Of course it is right in my field of vision too. DAMMIT!
so does anyone know what a replacement windshield costs? Can i just go anywhere to have it done?
I've read lots of post here about changing the windshield, everyone seems to be happier with after market one.
My car, now, have tons of rock chips. Still wait for the damn thing to crack so I can switch.
Is it because of the weight saving purposes or something that's why we have such a soft and cracky windshield, I don't know. But, we have one of the worst quality windshield, IMO.

This is completely dependent upon what insurance coverage you have. Your glass may have a zero deductable, a lower deductable than your comprehensive coverage, the same deductable as your comprehensive coverage, or no coverage at all if you've only got liability...
I think the cost is about $400. Remember how lucky you are that the rock hit the windshield rather than putting a huge scratch on your hood and then damaging the windshield.
Windshields are the easiest and cheapest "body damage" to fix.
You can avoid this by never driving. Also choosing a Hummer like vehicle will limit windshield damage--but at what cost!
Or pick up one of these used. They rarely suffer damage from 18 wheelers:
My S is a rock/stone magnet. I have had it for a month and a half and I don't drive it daily yet I have a chip in my windshield, a chip on my right front fender, and the last time I had her out I heard a stone pinging off of the front end of my S but luckily it didn't leave a mark. I try to make a conscious effort to keep my distance from the vehicle in front of me but this car is just a stone magnet.
As far as soft windshields most sports cars use them I know 911's have very soft windshields like ours.
I use my S as a daily driver. There seems to be alot of those heavy duty construction trucks here in Florida clogging all lanes. Our laws regarding restrictions for these behemoths suck! I wind up 'zig zagging' by them all the time and you never know what shit there kicking up to bust your windshield. I shouldn't talk because so far my windshield is ok.
