I think things were way different in the early 1950s. I think people were still captivated by brands like Chevy. I think people thought that Detroit could do no wrong.

If their remark is intended to be derogatory in nature I have two suggestions for openers:

"Your grasp of the obvious is truly astounding".

or

"Your automotive expertise is distinguished by it's absence".

 

On the AC Cobra: "it's only a Ford"

On the Viper: "it's only a Dodge, they make vans right?"

It's a stupid thing to say. One steps removed from racism. "he can't run fast, he's only white."

 

Here we are, 3 years after the car's debut, and I still get questions at parking lots and gas stations. Almost all of them are positive. Everybody is amazed that such a beautiful, agressive-looking car could be made by Honda. They sometimes ask "I hope they put a big 6 in it to go with the looks". I usually reply - "No, they didn't have a 6 with enough HP". That gets them asking more questions, and they usually walk away duly impressed. I've had several drool long enough I offered to let them sit in it, which they always do.

The ONLY time I had a negative comment was from a guy driving a Camaro (imagine that??), and it wasn't even a Z-28. Just like you said, his words were "It's a shame it's only a Honda", to which my reply was "When it's time to trade in your Chevy, you'll be saying "it's a shame it's NOT a Honda."

 

When someone says"It's just a Honda" I reply
But it doesn't have your mammas minivan motor

Don't have that problem here in Sac. The import scene is 10 times bigger than it's domestic counterpart. Most people that don't know will be like "Wow, that's a Honda?!" But mostly, I get the neckbreak, people will jolt their heads very fast to admire my car. Bottom line, Move to CALI.

I would just think in my mind wow .. this guy or girl is obviously really ignorant... You look like a jack ass trying to defend yourself.. You can't defend urself against naive people... I had this one girl tell me that the s2000 is a wannabe Z3.. I almost lossssst it.. but then i was like.. it.. What also pisses me off is how people can't grasp what is tacky and what's not.. I once had a conversation with this person about how i wanted the blue s4 with the blue suede.. His reaction was like whaaaaaaaaaat?????, blue suede????? illl gross... It just wasn't worth explaining to him.. It might not be ur cup of tea but have an understanding...
