Just How Exclusive is the S2K?
I've heard that the S2k is a really exclusive car, but am curious as to what the numbers really are. I read in car magazines during the its first year in the U.S. that Honda was only bringing over 5000 of them. What are the numbers now?
Part two of my question is, how many does each dealer get and are they distributed evenly among all dealers in the U.S. When I was shopping for it, I got all kinds of storie from the dealers so I'm curious.

don't know about how allocation works.
in terms of how many have been made... this has been a topic discussed with some regularity.

Over 8000 units were distributed and sold in the US for MY2000. Although the formula is not public it appears dealers received cars based upon previous year sales, with a two unit minimum. Aggressive dealers bought additional units from others and at auction.
[green]The dealers are allotted S2Ks based on sales numbers from teh previous year. At least that's how I understood it.Lot's of dealers still have allottments left of 2001s and many of them still sell for MSRP. The problem if tracking them down. Try s2ki.com [/green]
Needless to say, I am disappointed that the numbers are much larger than many think. Good for Honda I guess but not so good for our egos (?). I wanted the S2k not only because it was a fast convertible, but also because of its exclusivity. Although it is a Honda, I felt this particular car stood out among the rest in the world of import enthusiasts (and auto enthusiasts in general). I mean, who wants to buy a civic si and fix it up? Because afterall, its ONLY a civic. This is OK I guess, if you're looking for budget speed. But I was looking for a little more than that. My first choice was the NSX (talk about speed and exclusivity), but was held back by the obvious.
I guess my concern is, will increasing allocations to the U.S. result in a reduction in markup/price, and therefore turn this spectacular car into "another" civic or integra?

Just think of it as when you pull up to a stop light you aren't going to see another S2000 beside you and across from you. It's not a Teg or Civic, don't worry it's affordable, fast and fun to drive.
I guess I really just wanted to break out of the "just another Honda" mold that many civic and integra fixer-uppers end up getting into. Sure it is a "Honda" and if I really wanted to avoid the mold I could have gotten something else, but really, can you possibly name another car that can perform at the same levels for the same price? I've heard people say, "...yeah, that's a nice car but its STILL just another Honda". They maybe correct to a certain degree, but I seriously think that the S2K is worlds apart from civic's, tegs, accords, ect. It almost seems that the only Honda worthy of being set apart is the NSX (which, by the way, is my next goal, new or used, it don't matter).
I really hope we don't see the S2K ending up in import shows with all sorts of hideous headlight/taillight conversions, lime green paint, ugly kits that don't fit, pathetic white vinyl interior trim (or whatever color is made to match the exterior color). And those gawdy clock sized tachometers that people love to put on the dash of their civic dx's. Hey, you guys know what I'm talking about. I just don't want the S2K to lose its flavor and end up getting cheapened buy tasteless "enthusiasts".

Do you guys get TVR's? Here in the UK they cost slightly more than Stooks but are fairly rare. They take the opposite approach to performance - big engine! Have a look at http://www.tvr.co.uk/
