Just a reminder!
No, you do not need to tip the gas attendant.
It was to create jobs as cenix said.
You CAN tell them you want to pump your own, and they will often let you, but technically they can get fined if they do.
I've said this many times before, but if you are in Oregon and it's pouring down rain or blowing snow, it's really nice to crack your window a little, hand your card through the slit, tell them to fill it and stay where it's warm
AND it's basically the same price as Washington where you have to pump your own.
I rarely ever have had a problem with the attendant screwing it up. One time a guy did put regular in by mistake and I told him and he gave me a free bottle of octane booster
Doesnt really bother me.

I always specify the octane number when filling up since different stations have different octane ratings for premium, super, ultra etc. I guess it wouldn't make a difference though if their not paying any attention anyway.
I definitely don't mind having somebody else pump my gas when it's 20 deg in January though.

Wow, seriously? In Oregon, someone working at the gas station has to fuel up for you? How ridiculous is this?!!! Anywhere else around the country like this?

Yup.. People in Oregon and New Jersey (I'm not sure about any other states) must let the attendant pump the gas for them.
I bought my car from an owner in New Jersey and needed gas on the way home, I definitely had a hard time finding the gas door release.
There were a number of reasons for the law, prevent drive-offs, create jobs, etc. I doubt their was any one reason.

Great benefit in the winter time.
There was a homeless guy in Atlanta at the BP on Cobb parkway that did it for tips back in 1996 - 1998. The station didn't mind because it brought people in that liked the 'FULL' service at the self pump. The guy only asked for a dollar.
30 cars an hour = $30 an hour....good money. He was a nice guy too.

It's hard to tell sometimes if the attendant is putting in the right octane because they use the same hose for all grades. Problem for me is some attendants never tighten the gas cap enough so I'm always getting the check engine light
