Default to keep or not to keep

1. My son finally bought an S, and I have always told him to keep his 09 tc: bought it new, 30k miles on it.
2. He should be able to sell it for $12k best case, and $10k worst case.
3. He would save the $600/yr. insurance, so in 5 yrs. that would add up to costing $3k.
4. There would be the usual maintenance costs.
5. He reasons that by selling it, the $16k S won't cost him much after selling the tc, especially when you figure is money not spent for the above mentioned.
6. He has a good point, and I understand. I sold my del sol for $2500, and knew that it was going to cost me $2000 in the next 3ish yrs. in some upcoming maintenance (if it was like my last del sol, with clutch and other things), plus only about $200/yr. for liability b/c of its age. Plus, my wife got it out of the driveway (a valid point with out space).
7. Now, I wonder if I should have kept the del sol. I wouldn't have had to buy a hardtop: $3500, and wouldn't have had $800 of two sets of winter tires taking space in the garage (to my wife's chagrin).
8. So, I tell my son, besides the avoiding having to get a hardtop, or, in his case, having to replace the softtop every ?? yrs. b/c of ice and snow wear and tear since he probably won't spend the money on a hardtop, and not having to spend 2 trips to Discount Tire to get a set of tires changed out b/c you can't get all 4 in the car at once, and you have to do that twice/yr. Hassle, hassle, hassle! And, since he didn't buy tires there yet, he can't get the free change out, which will cost, what? $20, $50? each time (this just keeps getting better).
9. Then there is the occasional blizzard where anyone has no business having his S out in inches and inches of IN snow and ice (last 2 winters have been easy), but having a back up car could be priceless.
10. I have the snow tires and hardtop, and I have my wife's Corolla if it's really bad, b/c she's not going anywhere (I use it 1 or 2 times a week now, just to deter the car thieves over in the neighborhood where the school is, which is worse than last yrs. Mall situation.
11. So, here is what I want: give me your support for him keeping his tc b/c he's going to wish he had more than a 2 seater from time to time, and your reasons why. Or, why he should sell the tc, and just have the S.
12. He's grown, and can do what he likes and can afford to do what he likes, I'm just looking to the future to where he might think he wishes he would have kept the tc. I could be wrong, been wrong before.
13. Tell me of our experiences if you just have the one car: S2000.

23, S2000 is my only car. Central VA. It's getting old. I love the car, but the space and lack of practicality is slowly becoming an issue.

I could not daily drive my s either. It makes a much better "weekend" car imho. Plus they are total crap in the snow and sometimes the wet.

now, the s2000 is NOT a good daily driver. the list of sacrifices i have made to make this mostly impractical machine my only set of wheels is very long. however, after owning one for the past year, id do it all again.

heres why id like to keep the s for many years to come:
1. top always down- i f@#kin love it
2. vtec
3. this cars abilities can get you out of just about any situation caused by dumbasses around you
4. bwaaaahhh anyone?
5.simplicity- I hate overcomplication in my life, the s represents that to the letter. i do kind of regret adding adjustable parts like aero and suspension, but thats another story
6. its like wearing your sunday best, everywhere you go
7. 170k miles, vtec every single day, 25k miles a year- it always works no matter how bad it likes to be treated
8. ever fallen asleep at the wheel? you wont in the s
9. my dad says 'visibility builds character.' i live in a small town, the whole town knows what car i drive- and someone talks to me sternly if they think im driving wrong
10. chicks dig it

i think your son will gave a good time driving the s, he may grow tired of using it everyday, but having an excaliber class car as your dd is certainly a special experience- but not sustainable for most

+1 for everything.

I'm 22. I sold an '09 Focus with 35k miles to get an '01 AP1 with 65K miles. Over a year later, I still love it. It's sometimes annoying or impossible to drive my car with space and passenger issues, but that is rare. My main daily driver complaints are tires and gas are expensive, if I'm sick, driving the S sucks, and I always worry about theft in bad areas. I've had a few mechanical issues (hub, wheel bearing, clutch master cylinder leak, leaky radiator), but nothing too major. I emphasize finding a GOOD mechanic (not always dealer) and have him look over the car before purchase. If you take care of it and don't crash, and the S2K will last a while.

Did I mention that I love this car?

Depends on what he can afford. I have a Golf R as well as my S2000. As soon as the weather changes and there is even a hint of road salt, the S2000 gets put away.
If finances allow, get a second set of cheap wheels for tc. Put on snow tires, drive tc from Nov to Apr. No need to insure S in winter if not being driven either.
This seems to be a financial decision and sounds like your son will have to make it.

I daily drove my '06 S for over a year while living in an apartment complex. It handled well in rain and light snow with all seasons on it, but it was so stressful knowing that it was parked outside all the time, subject to all sorts of dings and the like. I know have a civic to DD and the S stays in my garage most of the time.

I think driving a civic as my DD makes the S that much more special when I drive it; almost like it was losing its luster driving it every day.
