Keep S2000 or Upgrade to 718 Spyder?
Original owner here. Haven't posted in forever.
Getting the bug to mod my S after all these years. It's an 04 Silverstone with 62k on the clock, in great shape of course. All original save the OEM radio which crapped out about 11 years ago. However, with values really starting to appreciate, I'd feel guilty doing mods now. I am sure it'd affect values. So I am seriously considering the 718 Spyder as a replacement, a worthy replacement IMHO. It has all the purity of the S and then some, with more storage, speed, and more rarity. Next gen 718 Spyder is going electric. So time is of the essence for the 6 speed, if I go that direction.
What say you?

Well does the S2000 still do it for you when you drive it? If not, then probably time to upgrade. Upgrades can make the car perform better but don't usually make a car that doesn't give you an emotional response do that. If you still love your S2000 then maybe do easily reverable mods that can add to your enjoyment of the car, and still save a ton of money over buying a new car. Wheels, tires, even suspension are reversable and won't detract much, if any, in value depending on the quality of the parts and if you retain the factory parts. Just avoid anything that involves cutting factory metal or puts a bunch more stress on the engine (like supercharger or turbocharger). Have you driven the 718 yet? If it make you happy and you can comfortably afford it (and if the S doesn't do it for you anymore), then cash in your S2000. If vins match and it's in great shape like you say then $30-35K shouldn't be difficult to get for it.
If you have $170,000 burning a hole in your pocket get the 718
Other than vanity I get the same enjoyment driving my former TR4 as S2000 or something even more exotic. I'm sure I'd get more envy if I was driving the 718 which has a much higher "look at how much money I spent" factor.

Can you comfortably afford the car, the maintenance and have an additional $20K set aside for an emergency as soon as the warranty runs out?
Just as importantly will you reallyyyyyy drive it as much as the S2K... are you sure? Yes, you are?
Then yes, do it.

I would consider the 2010 Boxster Spyder- erector set convertible, stripped down interior, manual shift..sign me up. For a Porsche, I want less stuff. Then again, I've not driven any Spyder so I'm just the armchair quarterback here.

The S still does it for me. And it's cheap to maintain / insure. The 718 Spyder is next level. And yes, I can afford it. It's in the secondary market that prices are getting ridiculous. Build quality and reliability on the 718s are great, just like the S. The mid engine design is in some ways easy to work on. But man... that ride, next level for sure. 9-12 month wait on an order... I just wonder.
One of the few cars I would consider getting rid of S2K for. But the S is still so cheap to run, insure...especially for track days (a lot cheaper for DE insurance than a $100k+ car)
It definitely seems like a worthy replacement. Haven’t driven one to confirm. If it makes you happy, go for it. Can’t go wrong with either decision as long as you can comfortably afford it.
