Keep the Z, or get an S?
Hey guys, i'm currently an owner of a 93 300zx twin turbo. The car needs some work, but could be fine with about 5,000 dollars or so. I've been pondering an s2000, and I test drove an 02 just a couple of days ago. They seem like a blast to drive. Storage is not an issue, and I don't really mind having only two seats, because my TT is a two seater anyhow. The Z is blazing fast, and has a lot of potential. People are telling me I will be disappointed with an S because of the torque.. blah blah blah.
Are there any previous 300zx TT owners here? Do you regret your decision?
Also, there are some other issues.. paid off vs. payments.
If I got the S, it'll get better gas mileage, and the maintenence will be less. Also, if it does break, parts will be cheaper. I'm looking to get into an S for around 16-18k.
Help me make a decision here.
I put a lot of miles on my car too, I commute to work/school. My old Z had 200,000 miles on it and still ran awesomely. Will the S stand the test of time/miles?
So, how bout it guys?

a buddy of mine had a 300zx TT, and that was a blast! i never really owned a 300zx but i think it's got its advantages and disadvantages as far as any car goes. but if you were to ask me, i've always been a honda guy and i like honda's there for i settled for a s2000 when i could of went for a STi or EVO. BESIDES the s2000 is just sexy!! i'm hooked and i can't stop starin!

as far as payments...if you can afford. go for it if you can.
i think the S get's better gas mileage from what i remember (friend didn't have it too long).
maintenence should defintely be less if your on top of everything.

"Are there any previous 300zx TT owners here? Do you regret your decision?"
- never had TT, but had E36 M3.
do i regret? no, it's different type of experience.
it's kinda like dating...one type of girl vs. another...
"Also, there are some other issues.. paid off vs. payments."
- this will determine how much you will pay for your insurance...
you probably want to call your insurance company and get 3 quotes:
paid off: liability only
paid off: liability, theft
payments: full cover: collision, theft
this will give your an idea of what you are getting into...and help you decide whether this potential increase worth getting into...
but i woundn't put too much weight on this because this is normal part of getting a more expensiver new or used car...unless you plan on driving 2nd cars all your life...

- there are folks in this forum nearing 100k milestone and experience on issues they had vary, but general consensus leans toward reliable side, plus this depends a lot on driver as well...how you welll maintain and how well/bad you treat her...plus in buying 2nd hand car, who drove previously?

That's a no brainer, get the S2K. It's not because I own one myself but the Z is played out, the body look old and not up to date. That car will never be as good as the RX7 or Supra TT. Those two cars are the only two older car that still look sexy. As far as how long the S2000 last, it's a Honda, they have been proven for years. It's up to you to take care of the engine.
i strongly recommend an s2000. its nice to have something that was recently manufactured and looks aesthetically pleasing. the fact that you said 'blah, blah' about the torque factor means that you probably are more inclined to a high revving engine anyway. take a plunge and trade up if you are willing to lose some shoulder room. you'll have a blast slingshot-ing the s2k around corners like your fairlady never could.

2 of my friends own(ed) 300ZX TT's...and after MUCH experience in both, I cna tell you that the 2 are incomparable. By this I mean, they are completely different animals. One is a lightweight roadster with most of its speed coming from the aforementioned weight. The other is fast due to brute force and horsepower.
The Z has much more modding potential, but I feel the S is more fun to drive and own IMHO.

I sold my 90 300ZX TT. I am in the market for an S2k now. The Z is a different animal. It is a great car, but as you know it has alot of age related problems. Also, the body is looking dated now as well even with jspec tails and 99 bumper.
After driving many S2000's, I can say the car out performs the Z in every category. A stock 04-05 S will run with a stock TT Z, it comes down to driver (in acceleration). Mod for mod the Z obviously has more potential. The older our faithful Z cars get, the more and more troublesome they become. If you need $5,000 of work right now, be prepared to spend MUCH more in the future. Might as well swap for a nice new car like a S2k while you can still get a reasonable amount for your Z (value of the cars are dropping like a rock). Good luck!
