Does anyone know if you can disable the passenger airbag on the 2006 S2k?

 

Yes, you can at least on the US cars. I was in the dealer yesterday looking at a 06 laguna blue and there was an airbag on/off switch from the factory.

The previous owner of our 00 had an aftermarket switch installed near the passenger door under the dash.

 

in the 06, there is a weight sensor in the seat. I think if the passenger seat weight exceeds 60 lbs.. the passenger airbag will deploy upon accident. if the weight is under 60 lbs, the airbag will not deploy.

 

the owner's manual does not recommend having small children in the car as passengers.

 

i must agree..i have 2 kids (never taken them in the s, but...) their car seat both have 5 point harnesses that absoblutley DO NOT allow them to move forward more than an inch. If the seat is properly restrained to the S2000 seat, and the child is properly restrained in the child seat, there is no way a deployed airbag will hit the kid's face.

Also, the main risk i think honda and most car companies refer to are the rear facing child seat (req. under 25 lbs in CA.). Once the kid is 25+lbs, they can sit in a foward facing seat. At 50 lb, they can go to booster seats.

Here's a small excerpt from Canadian law. Note that placing these seats in the vicinity of an airbag is NOT ILLEGAL, but being a new father, all the documentation I've seen that have accompanied my baby seats have said never to put a seat, forward or rear facing, in a seat with an airbag.

The Ontario Legislature passed An Act to Enhance the Safety of Children
and Youth on Ontario's Roads, Bill 73, in December 2004.

Upcoming changes to child car seat legislation

New regulations expected to take effect on September 1, 2005, will amend
the Highway Traffic Act to:
- Require more drivers, such as grandparents and babysitters, to use
child car seats or booster seats when transporting children
- Require booster seats for small children who have outgrown child car
seats but are still too small to be fully protected by seatbelts alone
- Assign two demerit points, a $90 set fine and a $20 victim fine
surcharge for failing to use booster or child car seats, or for using
them incorrectly

When to use a rear-facing infant car seat

Newborns and small infants weighing less than 9 kg (20 lbs) should be
secured in a rear-facing car seat.

When to use a forward-facing car seat

Use a forward-facing car seat - with a tether strap to better anchor the
seat - to secure toddlers who:
- Weigh between 9 kg and 18 kg (20-40 lb.)
- Are able to pull themselves up to a standing position
- Are about one year old

When to use a booster seat

Booster seats are required for children under the age of eight, weighing
more than 18 kg but less than 36 kg (40-80 lbs) and who stand less than 145 cm
(4 feet 9 inches) tall.

A child can start using a seatbelt alone once any one of the following
criteria is met:

- child turns eight years old
- child weighs 36 kg (80 lbs)
- child is 145 cm (4 feet 9 inches) tall.

When to secure a child with a seatbelt

A child can be properly protected by a seatbelt alone when they:
- Have had their eighth birthday, or
- Are at least 145 cm (57 inches or 4 feet, 9 inches) tall, or
- Weigh more than 36 kg (80 lb.)

When a child can sit against the vehicle seat - back with legs bent
comfortably over the edge of the seat, and the shoulder belt lies flat across
shoulder and chest, the child is the proper size to be fully protected by an
adult seatbelt.
Children under 13 years of age are safest in the rear seat of a vehicle,
away from active airbags. Drivers are responsible for ensuring passengers
under 16 years of age are properly secured.

 

I just stumbled onto this thread and although I have no kids at this moment...at least none that I know of

I sold my 2001 Spa s2000 to a local lady about 6 months ago and she had a toddler with her. She bought the car from me and promptly put a sheepskin seat cover on the passenger seat and then the child safety seat to strap in.

Never really gave it much thought back then since I don't have kids but now that you guys are talking about this, I can't remember for the life of me if the child seat was facing forward or back. The little boy with her was probably about 15 months old and could walk but definitely still a baby.

She loved the fact she could put a stroller in my s2k trunk that I remember but I wonder now if it's legal in CA....hmmm

Anyone know the legal age to have kids in the front seats without a child safety seat? I give rides to many of my friends kids and no one ever talks about the s2000 being unsafe?

I was driving the other day and saw a dad with his motorcycle and a little girl riding with him. My guess is the kid was like 10-12 years old....

Like I said, in Canada, a child can be in a car WITHOUT a car seat when ANY one of the following is met:

- child turns eight years old
- child weighs 36 kg (80 lbs)
- child is 145 cm (4 feet 9 inches) tall

Not sure what it is in the USA
