cool
thanks a lot for the quick response!

so, on the tach meter, when the red zero flashes, it means ...

1) time to shift?
2) red line?
3) fuel cut off?
4) engine is about to blow up?
5) all of the above?

1) that depends - because its reaction time and also torque curve. you'll have to work with that.
2) that's what the "red" part is, yes.
3) its just past there, why dont you take the car out, warm it up and just peg it at the top of first or second gear and watch it bounce off the rev limiter, and you'll feel the fuel spatter (on and off) thus trying to keep your RPM's down.
4) nope, not unless you downshift while in the red.
5) that's up to you to decide.

Just in case someone takes Schatten literally, thought I'd point out that he probably meant to say: "nope, not unless you downshift such that the lower gear's new rpm goes past redline"

If you're in the red and you downshift, then the engine will blow up.

This is true. It might not blow up, but you'll most likely need some new valves.
