Late in the year buying of a new S2000
In a normal year when there's a new model S2000 coming out in the fall, what kind of price drops do you typically see with the current model? For example, it's now July, which to me is the tail end of the 2008 model year. Should I expect prices to be falling now? If not, when?
I was given a 2008 MY price of $32,000. I live in the South. Is that a good price at this time of year? Is it likely to change much as the 2009 model year approaches? If so, when? August? September? Later?
I know this guessing may be complicated by the chance that there won't even be a 2009 version, so how do you think that will affect prices? Thanks.

By Nov you will see prices starting to fall. In Dec and Jan there will be buyers picking up '08s for below $30k. It's going to be a rough winter for car sales, especially for cars like the s2k...I would not be surprised to see some new '08s going for $28k new just to get them off the lot by late Jan.
I paid $31K for my 08 in mid-June (about $600-700 under invoice). Keep in mind that invoice minus holdback would be about $30900, which is typically the rock-bottom price at most dealerships until one of two things happens: 1) Honda offers dealer cash -- which they have done on lease deals this spring but not on purchases yet, as far as I know, or 2) you get very late into 2008 or early 2009 when the dealer absolutely needs to unload the car and will do it at a loss.
As I mentioned, the lease deal has had $1K dealer cash this spring, and some people have been successful negotiating leases down to $30K or so. If they offer dealer cash on purchases as we head into late summer or fall, that would definitely give you room for another $1K or so of discount.
The only problem with waiting until later in the year is that supply/selection may be limited in some parts of the country (I know it is in my area of tidewater Virginia). Compared to just a few years ago, they are making significantly fewer S2Ks for the US market. Demand has also dipped, but I still get the impression that particular-color S2Ks are harder to find now in 08 compared to when I bought my 05.
Good luck!

Getting an 08 in the spring of 09 would probably be the lowest price. Also some of the low prices mentioned are wishful thinking or very weakly based. Somebody posted a too good to be true price at a dealer, and when somebody else actually called the dealer, they got laughed at when they mentioned the posted price. Beware the BS that floats about on the forum. I got my 05 with 150 dealer miles in the spring of 06 for $29,800 OTD. When you start looking for a new s2000 with your favorite color in mind, you are going to find just how unique the car is. I've never seen more than 3 new ones at a dealer at any one time. Took me 4 months to find my deal.

If you are, or you have a friend who is, a member of Costco, you can find the participating Honda dealer in your area and get the arranged price. As part of the program, the dealer has to pass on any dealer cash or other incentive. At least this is a good price benchmark to do for your area, and to be sure you know about dealer incentives, if they exist.
