Default Lesson Learned

I was driving my car last night and pulled off a roundabout onto an exit for the motorway... gave her full WOT all the way through first and second and decided i wanted to coast in sixth so slipped her in.. got a grind and thought nothing of it until i slowed.. got into fifth and had to pull it back out.(it was fairly well stuck).. looked it up this morning and found that ive more than likely but a burr on the sleeve in the box... so....a message for all new S2000 owners or people with a close ratio box...

DONT SKIP ANY GEARS UP OR DOWN..

just thought id share

It can be done, maybe you just need a little more practice rev matching.

I'm guessing one or more of the following: bad luck, bad fluid, bad technique. I don't skip upshift my car, but I certainly skip downshift (rev matching of course) every now and then. I can't say I go from 6th to 2nd or anything though.

You can skip gears, just put it in each gear while going up to match the syncros and you'll be fine.

I've always wondered:

Skip shifting on the up-shift has potential to do damage, but what about if double-clutched? The tranny will be at the same speed as the engine RPMs. Obviously, it would be annoying to have to wait for your RPMs to drop to a suitable level after WOT through 2nd, but that is an extreme example. A more realistic one would be WOT through maybe 4th and then let the RPMs drop about 2k and shift into 6th?

Skip shifting on the down shift how does this not have the possibility to do damage but up shifting does? I assume it has less possibility to do damage because it is extremely common to down shift for the boost of speed/fun/what have you. Personally when I down shift from 6th I always double clutch, but not on any other gear.

All the aforementioned obviously rev-matching

Also, I've never down shifted 6th to 2nd, I'm worried I'd break something from the sudden surge. The most I've done is 6th to 3rd cruising at about 60-70 mph

upshift or downshift always has the potential of causing damage "if done incorrectly". Also with todays modern cars, there's really no need to double clutch in any scenario i can think of. There's just really no benefit b/c your syncros makes that method obsolete.

I'm confused, you could do damage by shifting from lets say 1st to 3rd or 4th to 6th?
