I'm in for this. Let's all try to agree on a day. The parking lot should be big enough to accomodate all our S2Ks.

I particularly like the "Grand Prix". Anyone else been there?

Sorry guys, but Speedzone blows. We need to go to Dromo Karting center in Orange. I went last weekend and it kicks some major tail.

Comparison:

Speedzone - 4 types of racing. Dragsters, slick karts, concrete karts (same as slick, but less sliding), grand prix. Only slick and concrete allow wheel to wheel racing. Cost is about $2.00/lap for Grand Prix, each lap lasts around 40 seconds if memory serves. About $3.00-$4.00 for a 4 minute wheel to wheel slick/concrete race.

Dromo - One type of racing - 20 hp slick karts. Track is indoors (big warehouse). Average lap time is around 30 seconds (top race laps are in the high 26/low 27 range). Cost is $20 and for that you get - full gear, firesuit, helmet, balaclava, gloves, neck brace. 6-8 qualifying laps to determine your grid position. 10-12 lap wheel to wheel race on a 10-11 turn course. Typically 8-10 cars in a heat. Karts are setup very nicely. Get to hard on the brakes entering turn 1 (and you have to brake) and you can loop the car in its own length. Requires some talent and is a great teacher of car control.

Overall, the karts at Dromo perform similar to the Grand Prix cars at Speedzone (but are smaller) with maybe a higher top speed. But you get to race wheel to wheel which is really cool. Lighter folk have an advantage on the straights, but driving skill is still 90% of winning (I'm 200+ and took pole and fast lap vs. some much lighter guys). For $20 you really can't beat it ($1/lap of hardcore racing). Do a session, get some lunch, come back and do another one. And you get printed stat sheets showing all your lap times, a graph showing progression, etc. Can't recommend it enough. Oh, the only real drawback is that there is no food or video games there, but if you want pure racing, its the only place in town.

I'm in for either Dromo or Speedzone. I've been wanting to try both out...yeah yeah, I don't get out much!

Theoretically I did, by a large margin :-).

However, I was ineligible, so it carries over to the next time. Just some extra incentive I guess. ;-)
