Default Lift and upshift, of course ...?

Having mostly grown up on manual shifting, I've always lifted the throttle as I upshift. Not until I got the S did I even hear about blipping for downshift, or heel-and-toe, or even hear the term "rev matching" which is what all that is for.

Lately I've been reading some other forums and some guys say they don't lift as they upshift in some other cars. I've tried this in my CR and the engine goes wheeeeee and the gear clunks and jerks, instead of a smooth shift. I don't see the point except for absolute max acceleration, and it seems like it's not kind to the clutch.

Am I doing it wrong? Is there a better way? Couldn't find any other threads on this exact subject in the last few weeks.

No, there is not a better way than rev-matching when you downshift.

When you upshift you should have your foot off of the gas; you will just wreck your synchros/clutch/diff by not lifting off of the gas during the upshift. The term for this is "powershifting" and it's bad news.

no need to bring up the rpms when you upshift. rpms drop when you upshift.

now when you downshift its good to rev match, but not really needed.

Thanks, that's what I thought. To clarify, I only tried it a few times and went back to lifting while upshifting. There are no dumb questions, only dumb people.

because when I busted out the steering column and stole it, I left a Miata in its place ... the real owner hasn't noticed yet.

drag racers do that on built transmissions to save time by not clutching....if you have a built trans go for it...otherwise i believe you'll be fine driving like your suppose to and just live with the tenth of a second longer on your 0-60
