Looking to buy a used S2k, couple questions!
Hey everyone,
I've started my search for a GPW 2004+ (AP2) S2k. My price limit is roughly 18k and I was wondering if this was possible. I notice dealers have quite a bit of mark-up, so has anyone succesfully haggled up to maybe $4k off of the dealer asking price? Also, how have dealer experiences been vs. private party purchases? Sorry if my searching failed me, but if there's already a topic about this please point me in the right direction! Thanks!
UPDATE:
I found a GPW/tan 2004 AP2 with roughly 50k miles on the clock that I'm very interested in. I emailed the dealer and threw out a 17k OTD offer (7k under their original asking price and 5k under their "reduced" asking price) and they literally called me 30 seconds after I emailed them and I scheduled a test drive. I am going to look over every nook and cranny and have already carfaxed it, seems clean so far! I'm not going over 17k OTD as they seem desperate. Hopefully this works out! Is it a good deal if I can get it at my offered price?

In today's market you never know with prices, but white is a popular color, and the 04-05 black and tan interiors are not on the market for long from what I'e seen, meaning you may have to pay closer to 20k for a good example, but as with all used cars, the right opportunity is usually out there. Start with the for sale forum here.

I don't believe you will find the price you are looking for at a dealership. Or at least it will be very hard to get it to that price assuming everything is good with it. Now with that said, you will have a better chance finding one for that price through private sellers. But as Saki has mentioned, that color is pretty hard to find(or at least more rare) and the mark up might be closer to 20k from a private seller. If it was silver, I'm sure you can find one for your price though.

Thanks for the responses! From my research it looks like 20k might be the low mark I can get an '04 or '05 GPW at. I love the color combo and I learned from prior car purchases, that having the color I want is worth that mark up in the end. Too bad S2k's are pretty rare as I really want to find one local.
Also, in regards to maintenance, from what I've read valve adjustments/major tune-ups are due roughly every 25k or so miles? How much does it run to have this done at and indy shop as a few S2ks I'm looking at are in th emid 40k mile range and probably have not had that done yet.

Whoops, I just saw some cars that said they had their valves adjusted at 50k. I guess I assumed since my car needs its valves adjusted roughly every 25k miles it was the same. My bad, bad assumption.

Just be patient and keep looking. The current economic woes probably means there will be more S2000's for sale in the near future. Keep checking Autotrader and S2ktrader as well as S2ki for sale posts. There are alot of our great cars out there. Take your time and your will find your set price. Good luck!
