Looking for a car in West Coast
Hey all. I have been looking at S's for the last 6 weeks. I am not in a rush to buy since I have 3 colors I want only. Blue and White are tied. But I am only looking at 06+.
It seems the price points are all over the place. I might have to wait until Winter to get what I am looking for. But are these price points too low?
2007, 40k miles= $21
2006, 40k miles= $20
I might consider a 05 for $19-20 but I drove a 07 recently and it seemed "softer" than a 04 I had a couple years ago. Maybe it's just in my head. I know the springs are softer and the seats are more cushioned. How much so, I really can't tell without driving them back to back.
I'm seeing people selling 05/06/07s with around 20-40k miles asking for close to $26k. That just seems way higher than cars I saw listed a month ago.
I am basically dropping the price by $1,000 for each year difference, and dropping/adding $500 for each 10k mile difference. For example, a 06 with 40,000 is $20k but a 06 with 50k miles would be $19.5k.
I haven't paid attention to Cali cars during the winter to know what the price diff is bet summer and winter but I am basing that on demand more than the temp change.
Examples of high prices:
2006 Honda S2000 2D Convertible only 26,544 miles - $27402
2005 Honda S2000 -65,000 miles $23800 (these are both stock cars, maybe they are high on weed in WA)

if people willing to pay it, then its priced correctly. if you want a specific color combo you might have to pay top dollar...if you dont care what color, just strictly year, itll opens more options for you. But say, a GPW low mileage will have a premium. and the CR's obviously will be even higher. you cant use say KBB for our cars. ive seen as high as $30k for 06-09 S2000's with 15-25k miles in Mint condition.
Include in your search Arizona and Texas. Still pretty clean cars (from the environment) and perhaps a lower price with better selection. I got my 09 in PHX and drove it home to Norcal.

Use the KBB trade-in numbers as a guide to get a good idea of what most sellers would consider the lower end of what they will accept. KBB's numbers aren't perfect, but they give you some guidance and it's what the sellers are looking at when they try to decide what to ask. As a VERY general rule, private sellers will price below what a dealership will ask but more than what they could get as trade-in.
I don't know what the S2000 population is like up there in WA (maybe check the regional forum), but I can't go a single day without seeing an S2000 here in SoCal. Literally. I'm not exaggerating. They aren't as common as Minis (those things are all over the place here!) or Miatas, but I do see at least one every day in my travels and it isn't my own. On days that I go to multiple client sites, I can see half a dozen. With that many of them here, chances are there will be more available for sale. You might consider expanding your search to include further south.
Memo, Cosmo and RMurphy's comments are spot-on, so no need to restate them. I also think your price adjustments for MY $1,000 and mileage $500 are excellent ways to compare different cars. The search for an S2K is part of the journey.
How was the selection of S2k's on the island?

thats an awesome price. I paid $26k for my '07 GPW last year with 19k miles on it in in Ft. Lauderdale. Great condition just some side bolster wear from the old man sliding out of the seat. Would have been nice to get it for $23-$24k but he wouldnt budge, and i really wanted a GPW with red/blk interior so a 2007 within 1hr drive from me, had to eat the price.
I saw a listing on our metro area Craigslist (Portland OR) a few days ago for a MY04 with 15k miles. The guy was asking 35k for it.
mg:
I got my 07 gpw for 20k last year with 31k miles so I dont think the OP's two examples are that far out of line depending on the condition they're in.

Thanks for the input. I've decided to wait it out until the right one comes along. So far, I've seen tons of red and silvers. I'm partial to the islands too. I think real estate and gas are pricey but the stuff at Costco is same price pretty much. Pokey is even cheaper of course. I do give a price appreciation if the tires are roughly new. We just put new tires on our M3 and it cost close to $2k. So if they put in new tires, I give them about $4-500 more depending on the tires of course.
